So, I have wanted a puppy for a long time, because I think their great companions for kids, we were in the process of getting one when COVID came along... I had a cat growing up though spent an amazing 20 years with him, he was kind of crazy..., but I was so attached to him, loved him more than one probably should love a pet, I'm sort of a robot emotionally at times but I definitely cried when his cancer got bad enough we put him to sleep. In fact I cried when my childhood dog got put down too, but she only made it to 7 years old, wasn't quite the same.

Ah yes, the little white twerp who went to anti women's rights rally in Trump hat, because teen boys know so much more about women's health than any woman possibly could, mocked a Native elder and became a hero on the right.

Anyone else notice how ABM gave this thread a neutral title while calling DNC convention no one watched? Day one of DNC had much higher ratings. Guess people like Michelle Obama more than Kimberly Guilfoyle. Can't say I blame them.

Me too. Half of them in particular. Cats are so much smarter, cleaner, prettier, and better behaved.

It isn't bias, if you understand that the major media news outlets are all biased and literally steer you away from the truth with their own political bias. Therefore, in knowing this, it can't be bias that tells you that CNN, MSNBC and Fox all feed you bullshit.

This seems like a very slippery path if the conclusion ends with, "we are all biased".

I am sorry. I see truths. The truth isn't fallible, nor biased.

My conclusion is that being human means we have biases.
I dont believe you see every truth, and that you’re impervious to deception, nor am I.

There are many types of biases. All humans have cognitive biases, they're built into the brain. There biases from prejudice, as prejudice is also built in from evolution. No one is entirely immune to prejudice, much as they may earnestly want to be. And there are biases from worldview.

It's admirable to want to be as neutral and fact-based as possible and we can certainly strive for objectivity, but no human is capable of perfect objectivity. No one takes in the world unfiltered--we all filter the incoming sensory data through the prism of our cognitive limitations (brains not only aren't objective, fact-finding machines, they were engineered by evolution not to be) and our worldviews, which are informed by genetics, environment and experiences.

    Yep.

If you don't know that you are biased, it doesn't mean you are unbiased. It means you lack self-awareness.

Sadly that is the direction I saw this conversation heading. It is too simple of a blanket argument to use on the whole of humanity this way. If we are all biased, we are all full of crap. So nobody should listen to anyone else, ever. This would even include the people that helped us form our very own opinions in the first place...

(Alright. I have had my fun for the day. It seems we are at a point where we agree to disagree anyways. :icecream:)

It doesn't mean everyone is full of crap, it means that no one is an objective paragon of truth. I didn't think that was a controversial idea. We all have to deal with our personal biases and do our best to be reasonable and logical in spite of them. Perfection isn't an achievable goal, and that goes for objectivity too--we can never be perfectly objective.

It seems to me that this is just a repackaged, fancy way of saying, we are all full of crap.

No, it means none of us are infallible and perfect. There's a wide gulf (IMO) between not being perfect and being full of crap.

But, of course, it all depends on how you define "full of crap." If you define it as "lacking perfection," then we are all, indeed, full of crap. The human condition.

None of us are infallible and perfect. This has nothing to do with a person's bias.

(I am done with this bias stuff now)

We can agree to disagree then. I think complete lack of bias would require a perfectly objective mind, and perfection is unattainable (as we both agree).
