Came out of left field. He was on the GS staff while KD was there, so there's some history. But I'm happy to see new blood in the game after the years of retreads.
Good news is that, with this hiring, we may not be the worst defensive team in the league next year. Probably will be, but maybe not
Why does this feel like a Maurice Cheeks style hiring? As in, "he was a great player in the NBA, he'll be a great coach!". I bet it was a players wanted a coach that they didn't think would make them play defense, and just have fun.
Very similar to how Jason Kidd was hired to coach the same franchise a few years back. History repeating.
I'm not sure that is the justification here. Nash has one of the highest BBIQ we've ever seen play the game. If he can effectively communicate to his team - he'll be a great coach. It has nothing to do with his status as a player.
Larry Bird was an excellent coach. So, it certainly has a chance of being an excellent outcome (just as it is likely to backfire). At the very minimum you know that the players will not automatically write him off.
Is it though? Kidd came into the league a designated star, while Nash had to bust his butt for recognition. I would bet Nash brings a completely different outlook to the job.
Sean Marks also has history with him from Phoenix. He and KD probably hand-picked him. Shouldn't just be dismissed.
They are both in the Hall, I don't think you can question their work ethics, although Kidd is a POS person and Nash is a saint.
You know what, I thought of that, but Nash I think will succeed. Something about him and how he carries himself and his knowledge of the game.
