Mother Japan always wanted to sell a Lexus at a Chevrolet price as they had the exchange advantage.
    Thats not hard to do.
When they moved Manufacturing from Mother Japan to the USA thats when their prices increased but also when Detroit Iron struggled and creature comforts became more important in all vehicles.
    Market segmentation. Good Better Best
Since Mother Japan didn't have the exchange advantage prices had to increase for luxury.

You make a bunch of assumptions about my spending habits. Savings are much more, but will go with your 1200.

Do you really think someone that drives a Camry for 18 years then pays cash for his next new car is running out to Walmart to splurge his savings? We have two HD flat screens. One is 15 yrs old. The other 10. I think I have used a delivery service once in my life.

Our biggest expenses? Kids activities and vacations. In just a few years we will be spending what amounts to a new car every year domestically on their college (also cash, no loans). Most, if not all of this money is going back to this country. We can do this because we are not spending money on vehicle payments and gas.

Again, if you do not advocate buying an inferior American product, which specific car should I have bought? I do not think the American car makers are wanting to sell what I want. They want to sell me a crossover, sports car, or truck.

BTW, I am not a fan of Walmart. Levi jeans learned the hard way how dealing with them is not a good idea. I do not think they fully recovered but it almost bankrupted them. Relatives worked there and benefits were few. Do not shop much but usually avoid them. Also try to do grocery shopping at Winco since they treat their employees nice while keeping prices low.

Interesting discussion going on but if it continues, and there is nothing wrong if it does, I am going to move some of these posts into their own thread in the OT section since this has nothing to do with sports.

Just giving everyone a heads up so you don't get upset.

    Thanks!

Yay Micheal Jordan is gonna sponsor a nascar team and it’s gonna be a wonderful experience for Bubba Wallace driving a Toyota!
Maybe we can get the Blazers to sponsor the car also so it can have a pinwheel on it?

No one made any assumptions about you personally.
Hope you enjoy your ride. Also I’m very glad to hear you put family first. May you continue to enjoy many blessings.

I had a feeling that was going to be the direction of your reply, and like @Charcoal Filtered said, it's based on many assumptions about individual habits. Go back and re-read the chain of comments and see if you still feel you're standing on stable ground there.

What makes you think you cant make $1000 a week delivering for Grubhub, or in my case, Doordash?

Thread probably is now OT, non sports.

Curious though, is that 1000 before or after gas and car expenses? How many hours a week? Any benefits?

Living wage was 60k in 2016 for Portland according to the Oregonian. Not sure I would be very comfortable raising a family making 52k a year with no benefits and added gas/car expenses.

How much did your health insurance for you your kid and wife cost? Did you happen to get any into your Pension? You will eventually have to retire. Did you happen to devote any of it to your Annuity? That is how you have something other than Social Security which probably won't be there when you are 65 or 70. How about your dental insurance? Life? Are you also covering your gas and maintenance costs?
    I said -
"In the hand" means yours after expenses and personal needs. You do realize to pay for that you will have to gross about $2000 or more a week or well over 100K a year. All along i have been talking about "Living Wage". I suspect you are covering your mortgage and car payment as well? Door dash is a great second income i'm sure. I am in no way going to make it sounds like anything less. But lets be honest here. It's not a living wage that will support a family and actually create the American Dream. But if you work hard enough (thinking 40 hours) and work a second job you might get ahead. You can also get married and have your wife work a job but then kids of course cost money and day care becomes another expense.

The very argument @Charcoal Filtered is making is actually making mine. But of course you might not see it that way. I also see that he doesn't either but i can tell you many of us who are making a real "Living Wage" are fighting every day to keep it.

Like i said above. Hope he enjoys his ride. I also wish you all the very best with your Door Dash Job and You Tube channel. You obviously work very hard and are becoming successful. I honestly am very happy for your success. What has worked for me however is much much different and no i will never buy a car made by a Japanese company or any other country for that matter. I don't just have this issue with Japan though they have been the biggest problem. The other problem this country eventually has to deal with is banks. But i will leave that for another thread someday on OT.

    Peace!

Misinterpretted what you meant by "in hand".

Doordash is a planned stopgap. And hopefully Prop 22 gets passed in CA and we get something similar here.

I'm actually watching Doordash pretty closely. They have a delayed IPO right now pending the Lawsuit in San Francisco that is also on hold all due to Covid-19. Grub Hub has done well in the markets but Door dash appeals to a larger group if they can get through the red tape.

Here is the wording on the press release- “Misclassifying workers deprives them of the labor law safeguards to which they are entitled, denying workers minimum wage and overtime pay, unemployment insurance and protection from discrimination, among other things,” Boudin said in a press release. “[…] Now, more than ever, with the COVID pandemic, we must protect our workers, especially those essential workers who are delivering food to us each and every day.”

I highly suggest you watch this:

AB5 is slimy. They're trying to fit an industry into a "one size fits all" box when is doesnt fit 80% of drivers would vote it down. Meanwhile you have Prop 22, which is taking the issues that drivers have and addressing them without eliminating the things drivers value most about this job.

If you want to be an employee with all that entails, don't drive for Uber or Doordash. It's not like we got tricked, we know what were getting into with this job.

Yeah that's pretty much the way i take what was originally the idea. This seems like they want to make the job a pizza delivery position instead of a Gig worker who might want to be an independent contractor. Something to watch for sure.
