Will we have to wait for Olshey to leave before we get a backup PG?

Now, maybe the place to address backup PG is in free agency. But the place to address backup PG for Olshey seems not to exist. Could it be there's a reason our team falls apart unless we've got Dame on the floor? Would it KILL him just to have a real pass-first team leader on the bench?

in Dame's 2nd and 3rd season, the Blazers had Mo Williams then Steve Blake at PG

however, it's not a coincidence, IMO, that there has been no real backup PG since CJ got elevated to his starting role. Contrary to evidence, Olshey appears to still believe that CJ is a PG. And now, with Simons being another small guard that Olshey is heavily invested in, there's not a lot of reason to think the M.O. will change

I don't buy that Neil doesn't get backup pt guards....Ronnie Price, Earl Watson, Mo Williams, Steve Blake, Wade Baldwin, Tim Frazier, Shabazz Napier, even Jaylen Adams in the bubble...Neil has looked for and brought in backup pt guards and CJ wasn't the last one or even a pt guard..we just let them go after a short sample size..he used Mason Plumlee, ET and to an extent Mario as distributers when we lacked a real backup pt guard...those 3 distributed the ball for a short time...Ant is supposedly being developed to play the pt guard position but he's super raw at this point.

Sadly, many of the names on the list barely qualify as back ups let alone PG's and certainly the majority aren't of very high quality.

Didn't say they were starters but they in fact are backup pt guards like them or not....saying Neil hasn't brought any in I think is misleading....he hasn't found a Lou Williams for the bench but those guys aren't cheap or on the block often

And no one was claiming they were starters. But what is needed is a quality back up for a contending team. I see very very few that would qualify from that list. Just having someone fill a uniform who is short, while technically being a backup PG, is not what this team needs.

a pt guard that could be signed cheap and help the bench in my view is Jeremy Lin....and he brings a whole lot of fans with him...he's sort of a Luke Ridnour type pt guard

I think there is actually some better guys available. Whether they would sign here is another matter.

Curry was a decent back up but elected to go elsewhere probably for more consistent minutes. Think about it, how many legit/quality good BU's would want to play behind Dame when he plays 35-40 minutes a game?
I think the best we'd do is an older vet thats on the downside of his career or a younger guy that maybe isn't considered quality at this point. The guy they had in the bubble would be that, and actually he didn't do to bad at times.

Derrick Rose’s $7.7 is just alittle over the TPE but he would be PERFECT. Would we be able to trade salaries with the TPE? I’m not totally familiar with all the rules.

I imagine it would also take more than a couple of 2nds to get him though. Avery Bradley also just declined his option, I like him as well.

I'm not really interested in the old re-treads, particularly guys (like Lin, Rose and Bradley) who aren't pass-first. I want a guy who will take our bench and make it into a cohesive unit. Remember when we won the SL "championship" a while back? The difference when we committed to playing Jorge Gutiérrez was night and day. Initially our SL coach wanted to play a guy who would make the roster, but despite being more talented, he just wasn't a natural PG. Gutiérrez made us a team.

I don’t totally get the Summer League comparison, but I can see your point.
What about Wanamaker then? You could probably get him for the BAE, if not the minimum.

Good shooting numbers for a backup pg, last year .448/.363/.926 averaged in around 20mpg, 71gp. He’s only played 2 years in the NBA but he’s like 30 and has played overseas. So he can just be a dependable backup until Simons can be that guy.

4.7apg per 36 mins and not a high turnover guy. Would be serviceable.

There is plenty of back up point guards to be had in free agency

    Rajon Rondo
    Goran Dragic
    Jeff Teague
    DJ Augustin
    Jeremy Lin
    Shabazz Napier

    I want Jordan Clarkson
