Former Trail Blazers star Brandon Roy has a message for Carmelo Anthony and the Trail Blazers: If Anthony wants to wear No. 7, the team should make it happen.

“I would be honored if he wore it,” Roy told The Athletic. “So we should (let him have it).”

Last week, Anthony said he would like to wear No. 7 for the Trail Blazers, a number that hasn’t been issued by the team since 2011, when Roy last wore it before his promising career with the team ended after five seasons because of degenerative knees.

Anthony, who wore No. 7 from 2011 to 2018 with the Knicks, Thunder and Rockets, was not offered No. 7 by the Blazers when he joined Portland in November 2019, presumably out of respect to Roy, who in his five seasons in Portland was a three-time All-Star, a two-time All-NBA pick and the 2006-07 Rookie of the Year. A source inside the Blazers said the organization has no plans to retire any number.

Anthony chose No. 00 last season, and in his first meeting with reporters last week, he wore a red hat with the number 7 on the front. When asked if he was switching numbers, Anthony chuckled.

“Listen, if Portland gives me No. 7, I’ll be happy,” Anthony said. “I’ll be thrilled. We need a petition for that. I need No. 7.”

Roy told The Athletic there is no need for a petition, in part because of a story from their meeting on Christmas Day 2009 that still resonates with Roy.

After the Blazers beat Denver in a back-and-forth duel — Roy finished with 41 points and Anthony 32 — Roy asked a favor from Anthony. In the stands watching the game was Roy’s cousin, Juleesa Johnson.

“I asked Melo if my cousin, who was sick from cancer, could shake his hand and take a picture with him,” Roy said.

Roy remembers Anthony being with his family, but Anthony didn’t hesitate to accommodate his request.

“He said, ‘Of course,'” Roy said. “Made her night. He was her favorite player.”

Johnson passed away less than two years later.

Cool article, thought it should be in its own thread for a little while. I'll merge it later.

Just got some MORE respect for Roy. He needed to do this. Glad it happened.

I'm not surprised. I know some have a weird grudge against Roy but I always thought he was a really quality guy. I think he withdrawal from the team has so much to do with his disappointment in a promising career cut so short. I mean, I still don't think he's anywhere in the stratosphere of guys who should have their number retired but that doesn't mean he wasn't really good for us and a quality guy.

Here's a thought: maybe they made a shitload of 00 jerseys for the holiday season and they don't want to have to make a bunch of 7 jerseys and toss the 00 jerseys.

In all seriousness I bet Melo will get 7 by the time the season starts, it’s not that serious. It probably wasn’t an issue until Quick made it one.

Glad to see BRoy come out and honor Melo like this...10 time Allstar...multiple Olympic gold champ Melo....HOF first ballot shoe in...18 years and still playin' Melo! I'm very happy and wondered if he'd say anything after Melo said he'd love to have it. Respect BRoy...now come see a Blazer game when you can! Promise you'll be showered with love from the fans...

I have to disagree. I love the tradition. There are certain guys that embody a franchise or the game in general (like Clyde, Bill and Dame) that there should never be another 22, 32 or 0 for the Blazers. I actually like what the NHL did with Gretzky and I would like to see the NBA do the same with Jordan. Jordan is number 23 and if I had my way there would never be another one in the NBA.

Disagree, at least for league wide retirements. It's literally just a number.

I mean you could look at it like that. I look at a guy wearing someone’s number as an homage. And it’s much easier to see a number on the court than up in the rafters collecting dust. It’s also funny how few guys with retired numbers have an issue with somebody else wearing it.

    Yes, indeed a good article.

Yes, we need more fodder for the Melo thread to surpass the Covid thread.

When it becomes ripe may it be juiced and poured into the Super Carmelo Anthony to Portland Mega Thread

Don't merge the threads, merge the jerseys and have a 007 edition! It would beat the piss out of our City jerseys.
