I mean, he's better than Giles. If nurk was out the whole season and hes a backup on vet minimum? Maaaaybe? Probably still not, though. It seems like there's a lot of teams that go small with their backup bigs. Rather not have 2 lumbering ones as our options
He’s averaging 17.5/13.5 with about 2 blocks and a steal. He was pretty good when Cavs were winning earlier in the season.
This absolutely screams national media person that isn't locked into Portland's situation. Oh a big man is available and Portland needs one! It makes no sense. 1) Drummond's contract alone makes this a non-starter. 2) If Olshey wanted a player like Drummond he would've just re-signed Whiteside in the off-season at 1/20th of the cost. 3) Kanter is better as both a backup if Nurk is healthy and as a starter in the meantime for this team.
Drummond as the replacement again doesn't make sense. We'd have to give up Nurk AND one of Hood/DJJ/RoCo AND at least one or more of Collins/Ant/Little plus still be under the tax enough to sign at least 2 players (or more if we gave up more than 3 in the deal). Super unrealistic.
I'd be okay with Drummond if we could transplant Kanter's offensive ability into him. You still have a lumbering center who can't switch, but at least now you have a pretty good rim protector and one-on-one defender (against bigs), who can actually score. Drummond is basically an inverse of Kanter...both are rebounding monsters, Kanter is a defensive zero, Drummond is an offensive zero. But Drummond is paid like a guy who can do both, Kanter isn't.
And against the Blazers a few days ago he looked to have slightly better mobility than the Lincoln Memorial. He's always put up good numbers that seemed empty. Now they seem emptier.
Doug Smith: I will go back to what an NBA advance scout who I greatly respect told me of Andre Drummond “He can get you 30-20 and have no impact on the game”
I can't imagine why any team would trade for him. He's a buyout waiting to happen. Once that happens, though, yeah, I'd definitely look at getting him for a vet min if he were willing to take it. And if I were Drummond I'd seriously consider Portland. A lot of centers (Nurk, Kanter, Plumlee, Meyers to name a few) have really spruced up their careers by setting screens for Dame. Whiteside is pretty much the only one I can think of where it was a completely lateral move to play in Portland.
I guess if you wanted to clear some cap space? Honestly, if I'm Boston, I'd trade Kemba for him. Kemba has been a massive bust.
Is Drummond even a good defensive player? Or is he a good defensive player in the same way that Hassan Whiteside was? 50% true shooting as a center. Ugh. That's even worse than Nurk.
Definitely the comparable to Whiteside part. He's a little more mobile than Whiteside but Whiteside's a much better finisher.
This doesn't make any sense. Nurkic isn't dead or even lost for the season. We have a great backup once Nurkic is back - why would we be looking to acquire a center who is paid more than our two current centers combined?
