I love how people who 6 months ago didn't give a shit about how people were treated at the border, all the sudden now care. How strange.

I cared then and I care now. Is that strange?

Neither. Just trying to make a point that the problem has existed for a long time and hasn’t gotten better no matter which party is in power. To me, that points to it being a complex issue without easy answers. Both parties like to make political hay out of border issues, but neither one really gives a damn about fixing them.

And I'm trying to make a point that it's funny how many people all the sudden give a shit about it and act like it's horrible now when 6 months ago they were perfectly fine ignoring it because they thought their leader was going to win.

I didn’t miss your point. It was pretty damned obvious. I’m just enough of a contrarian to point out that there’s a fair amount of hypocrisy in play the other direction. We had a lot of news reports about children in cages under Trump. There are fewer reports now that the children are in cages under Biden’s watch. I, for one, hope that changes soon.

Here’s the thing - they think it’s surging now and the number of people running across the border are so much higher since Trump left. I literally have no idea if that’s true or by how much or what. But that’s what they think, so now they are concerned.

Were you in a cave when Trump was President? Did you not see him in action? He was the perfect archetype of pure evil.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
It's true that neither party has made solving the issue of migrants and refugees at the border, with a sustainable process, a priority. That's a perfectly reasonable "both sides." However, acting like Trump behaved the way every US President has, when it comes to people trying to cross the border, is willfully blind. I won't argue that Obama or anyone else handled it well...but no previous President demonized immigrants and tried to make object lessons of refugees like Trump.

Both parties are culpable. Trump was an outlier when it comes to being terrible about border issues.

As to what Biden can do--precious little immediately. Resources at the border are what they are, no amount of caring can wish more resources into existence. It's a humanitarian crisis which, as was mentioned earlier in the thread, is going to need both parties and other nations to be involved in figuring out how to solve it in a humane way.

I get it you hate Trump with the passion of a million suns but you also have to understand that this issue predates Trump by decades. And I have people that I trust that saw the conditions first hand that tell me the detention centers were WORSE under Obama, but you don't read about that because "Orange man bad!" is a much better headline. Listen I think Trump is a pretty detestable man and a horrible President, but I'm also able to see a situation for what it is. I've lived down here for over a decade and have a wife/family that has lived here their entire lives that will tell you this issue is LONG before Trump.

Where are those numbers? I'm not sure if there is an increase but I can tell you it's a problem no matter if the numbers are going up. But I'm sure you are an expert on all this living 2,000 miles away from the border!

That article says there is a surge, especially of unaccompanied minors coming across but for a number of reasons. Like everything in life this isn't a cut and dry situation and sadly too many are making it that way when it comes to partisan politics.

Well, he always wanted to represent Cancun - and these people could have come from there, so...

Clearly, the best thing about having Trump as president was that he was a natural deterrent - not many wanted to come here when he served... and who can blame them?

The true reason I don't read about that is because credible journalists, journalists who have won awards for journalism excellence, journalists who tell it like it truly is, don't report this. Now, did that ever occur to you?
Here's some advice, FIRST, get a credible source! What is a credible source? A credible source is one that's won a significant number of awards from credible organizations, for journalism excellence. I suggest beginning with the Pulitzer prize and then going to others such as the Peabody awards.

Since you live and your family live there and see whats going on, plus you seem like an individual thats not looking for political gain, I receive your input with more confidence than I do any media right now as there is political incentives.
The one thing I have witnessed myself is decades of Congress and administrations doing nothing to bring about a reasonable immigration reform and border management.

Not sure what bone you have to pick but the condescending tone out of your post tells me you aren't looking for information but to have what you think is right be confirmed. If you don't think that the main newspaper in Austin is a credible source, or numbers coming from US Border and Customs Protections are credible then I don't know what to tell you. Please though I'd love to see some Pulitzer Prize winning journalist doing a deep dive into this issue and whether more people are or are not coming across. I hope they've been to the border and detention centers and seen first hand what is going on. It's a shit show and has been a shit show for a lot longer than Trump was in office. I consider myself to be a pretty good journalist (though mainly doing sports now) and I've got no shot at ever winning a Pulitzer but I bring (what I hope) is some pretty good insight and information into this situation that you won't get from the major news networks. Sorry we can't all be winning Pulitzer's but that doesn't mean the information that some of these journalists at a local level are bringing you is any less credible.

I honestly was amazed hearing about the detention centers under Obama (not that I blame him directly) and how horrible it was since it didn't seem to be on the national media's radar. I heard it from three different people, all that I trust, that worked for three different law firms that were working in immigration law. Obviously this isn't an easy fix situation but to think that it just popped up four months or even four years ago is asinine.

I feel this is the affect of our decades long war on drugs along with our meddling in central american politics. The only real way to fix this issue is to change our drug policy and start providing aid to these countries. Really we owe it to them for messing them up so badly and it would help us at the same time. In the mean time there is no reason why temporary migrant worker visas shouldnt be issued to people who want to work labor jobs to send money back home, everybody gets a tax number and pays taxes. This would also make it harder for business owners to exploit these people in their desperate state.
