Yes, there's almost no realistic way for them to avoid the tax next year.

My point stands though. If CJ is traded, there's no way that they are going deeper into the tax - so getting a large TPE would be just as beneficial (if not more) to Portland than having the ability to take back someone with 1.25x his salary

CJ to the Knicks is what the plan should be this summer, should have been last summer (probably could've had Randle), and maybe should've been even earlier than that.

i know very little about the cba rules.
If we avoid the tax this year, can we go all out aNd sign whoever we can next year to go all in for a ring and then deal with the fallout the next offseason?

No, there's still a salary cap. The luxury tax exists to reign in all the ways you can exceed the salary cap (primarily Bird rights players)--but the cap still prevents you from simply signing free agents if you're at or above it (aside from specific exceptions like the mid-level exception or the bi-annual exception).

like Minstrel said, there are still the limitations of the salary cap. Portland will likely only have the tax-MLE to use next season, and that's significantly less than the full-MLE

and there will be fallout in 2022

Portland is staying below the tax line this season so they would not have to pay repeater tax next season. The CBA trigger is having been a taxpayer in any 3 of 4 previous seasons. The previous two seasons Portland was a taxpayer. But if Portland is a taxpayer next season, then they'd be in the repeater tax in 2022-23 if they are still a taxpayer. So the repeater tax issue hasn't been solved, only punted down the road a year

Now, I'm not convinced at all that Portland will be a taxpayer next season. Probably, but if Powell and Jones opt out and sign elsewhere, Portland would be well below the tax line with not enough space or exceptions to hit the line. I'm also not certain that Seattle would approve another tax season, especially if Portland fails in the playoffs this season in the same fashion they have for 7 years.

what appears to be is that Olshey is hoping for one final crack at building a contender around his Dame/CJ experiment next season. One more year of trying the same dumb things over and over....that being rearranging the lower end of the rotation hoping for magic beans. Go into the tax and try to win a championship. More low risk moves while Olshey collects another 7 million in salary and makes strategic, self-serving leaks to Woj

Any player back to me would have to be expiring contracts the following year. I really don't think they will trade Dame if he not asking for it and last thing I know he not asking.

If they got Middleton or Siakam or someone on that level for CJ you don't think they'd go a few million more into the tax to do it?

If Olshey trades CJ in the off season you know he's run it by Dame. And if it picks coming back with not a player of CJ's caliber? Unless it free's up space to sign Norm?

Ideal for whom? A couple might be interesting, but would depend on the quality and timing of the future first round picks.

But I still prefer CJ + Nurkic for Towns and a pick

    Hello darkness, my old friend
And I prefer Towns and a pick for a signed-and-traded max contract Melo.

Let's see if either of us gets their wish.
