It’s bad these days. Those who fail to acknowledge it are in denial.

Many parts of the city look like a 3rd world country.

KOIN just had an hour special the other day about how fucked up the city has become.

I have a granddaughter that was discussing with a few college and career councilors about various schools to attend in a year, both advised because her age not to attend PSU because of the mess and harassment down at the park blocks. I told her I would take her down there and she can decide herself. Thats where I went early in the 70,s and wife got her Masters. For councilors to be directing kids away from PSU is unfortunate.

I contend that the only real solution starts with closing the wealth gap.

So you agree with Adams and Wheeler that putting the homeless in neighborhoods around town will accomplish this?

As corporations dole out less than living wages, our own U.S. government looks the other way. Our U.S. congress is every bit as inhumane as our ruling class is.

Things are only going to get worse.

So the city announced FINALLY that they are going to start to be more aggressive cleaning up homeless encampments. They concluded that their passive approach "has not been effective."

Seems to me that our homeless population knows it can do whatever it wants, wherever it wants. Tent here, there, garbage, just do your thing. Maybe they should feel like they can't and they might be encouraged to change their ways. If they have to live in a homeless shelter in a vacant warehouse somewhere and cant have bonfires on sidewalks, they might not have as much fun and figure something out. If not, no problem, but you arent throwing up a campsite on the freeway. They have got to figure this out, bring in experts from cities around the country - or world - who have tackled homelessness, and solve it.

I dont buy closing income gap, comes anywhere close to solving homelessness. Ive know a number of individuals over the years that choose to live amongst homeless as its insulates them from addressing addiction issue's. There is help available but mant choose not to change. Yes, a percentage are dealing with mental issues and there is help for them too. And there are many that simply are lazy or don't want to work or try and get on their feet.

I don't think there is anything "fun" about it, but it can't just be anything goes. I work in the Pearl. There were 3 homeless people sleeping on the street and two new tents here this morning. WTF Portland?

oh man your a out to get blasted. Lol

i said basically the same thing last year and was laughed and mocked at and considered heartless, i think was a word used when i claimed the homeless have help, are mostly teens and addicts and most can make a choice to get better or not.
Thats why i disagree with paying any money to house the homeless. Because i beleive most in this city will just abuse the grants or free things they might get.
Just like my father who i cant help until he decides he has a problem requiring help, the same goes for the bulk of the homeless.

but last year the homeless are there because of covid. Not because of being lazy teens or drug addicts.
    Lol.
Anyhow im with you. There is help already. What most need is a swift kick in the ass to get off their ass and get productive.
How many tents have you seen with people sleeping inside or outside in the middle of the day?

Not to butt in, but yes, I do. If they are putting them in apartments. That would be far better than a centralized location keeping them all together.

Our congress is a PART of our ruling class. That's where they come from. Need publicly funded elections ASAP, and increased disincentive to go from congress back to the private sector.
