Agree! I have been calling for a Towns + Rubio for CJ, Nurkic and whatever else works since March in various threads! Towns is an excellent fit alongside Dame and a healthy Collins
First of all, a "healthy Collins" is a semi-mythical creature. Secondly, is it too much to ask not to make a historically bad defense even worse? Towns is in effect a league average player - he's a great offensive player (but see below) but literally the worst defender in the league. Also: in today's league, the job of your bigs is primarily defense. There are no successful teams with all-offense bigs. I bet Jahlil Okafor or Boban Marjanovic could put up KAT numbers if they played the same minutes as him - but nobody will play them those minutes FOR A FUCKING REASON (well, in Boban's case it would probably kill him). You know the only player that you might successfully pair Towns with? Ben Simmons. He's a fantastic defender and a big guard who can't/won't shoot. Even then I bet it wouldn't work. Towns is a modern day Shareef Abdur-Rahim.
I agree with both of you. KAT is an elite offensive talent with significant flaws but if he's the one shot, in the near term, of pairing an elite player with Dame, Portland has to do everything they can to make it so. The clock is ticking loudly, and only getting louder. Dame + CJ + Nurkic are now 3-12 in the playoffs. If there is a chance Portland has to try Dame + KAT besides that, there seems to be a prevailing sentiment around here that a new coach will mask the flaws in the roster. If that's true, the new coach should be able to mask the flaws in KAT
Would have to see the result of the Mavs/Clips game (I’d still rather have PG), but the best trade I can come up with would be: NYK get CJ POR gets KAT MIN gets Nurkic, Toppin, Knox, Simons, 2021 #19, 2023 top-3 protected POR 1st, 2025 lotto protected POR 1st, 2023 NYK 1st And they also could probably trade Nurkic to BOS for at least another 1st round pick. Use whatever cap space is left to add a forward and run with Dame/Powell/Covington/____/KAT. But geez that bench is gonna be rough next year. A healthy Zach at the 4 or backup 5 with Nassir taking a step up would certainly help alot though.
I want to see Little play on our summer league team this year. He needs minutes, confidence and chance to show our new coach his potential.
I think Minnesota's rebuild is over and they are ready to reap the rewards; young guys growing as a team. They don't want to trade KAT.
