Zach never had much hops, was foul prone, lacked a consistent jumper and was constantly stifled at the rim by opposing defenders. He's a backup at best for a team with an aspirations of going deep in the playoffs..
I don't disagree with much of what you said, except the starting lineup at the bottom. The Blazers need a more dependable option as a starting forward. Zach can take a roster spot and be a wild card for the year, but he can't be slotted to fill in a starting or key reserve spot. Ant has earned the 6th man spot. I hope Powell is back as a starter. Roco and Nurk are likely back. Kanter is fine as an 11th man on a veteran minimum deal. Hopefully Little improves and earns a role but like Zach he can't be depended on for a role. Maybe DJJ improves to a full season bench role or is just injury backup. So something such as cut Melo, trade CJ for the best forward help you can get, sign a 3+D MLE player, and sign a BAE backup PG.
Jason Quick implied the first contract offer to Meyers was 15M/year. He followed that up the follwing summer by saying the 2nd contract offer to Meyers was a "bargain" compared to the 1st contract offer. So, likely, 4-year/60M....yeeeeeeesh
I got a super deal on my son's old Nissan Xterra when it had a broken motor mount and needed front shocks...it's run problem free for years since fixing....there's always hope because I haven't heard about Zach having setbacks and he's waited a full season to make sure he doesn't have another setback....CJ had foot problems in college and his first two years with the Blazers....a guy like Zach is 24...you can just pretend he was a 4 year college guy who just got drafted actually....and he's not going to be expensive now....I don't see the downside to bringing him back next season and giving him a two year deal with a team option second year...Zach can play ...he just couldn't stay out of foul trouble so I hope a good big man coach can correct that
Zach fits a role either as a starter or coming off the bench it's what needs him to be but it should be a major role. His offense role might get bigger with a different coach. Yes hopefully he getting stronger so he be more effective around the rim and maybe they will hire big man coach that will him and the rest the bigs can benefit.
Does anyone here seriously doubt that Olshey will hand Collins a Leonard style albatross contract? It's just the way he rolls.
I do....at best I see him getting a low range 2 year deal with a team option 2nd year...look at the deal Neil cut with Nurk....Enes....Melo...the days of Meyers Leonard overpays are long in the rearview mirror in my view.
I would take a healthy Collins’ shot blocking over Kanters offensive rebounding. Rim protectors are truly one of the most underrated aspects of the NBA game
I’d rather sign Kanter for 2 years / $6 million per than to take chances on Collins. We should not pay him more than $6 / year - it’s just not worth paying a cheerleader that kind of money
That's a tough one. Shot blocking and shot altering are important. But he needs to be a better rebounder as well. And he needs to stay out of foul trouble. For a guy with a high BB IQ he made a lot of mistakes. But he was young at that point. If Zach can stay healthy then I think he will improve in every area.
Kanter is totally worthless in the playoffs due to his inability to defend. I love the guy for his attitude and his rebounding and offensive skills, but I think it’s time to move on from him…just like every other contending team that he was on before has decided to do.
Agree, though I do think that Zach will improve as a rebounder with his added bulk. People who are writing him off because of his injuries are premature, in my opinion. Dame and CJ have both dealt with broken feet…CJ twice. A repaired and rehabbed shoulder is not a risk for a repeated injury. I expect that Olshey will re-sign Zach to a one-year prove it deal.
I would once he starts scrimmaging we will have a better idea if he's progressed, matured both game and body. He's going to earn whatever he gets next and to come.
not really. He dropped last season from the season before....tiny sample size though still, a 12.2% rebounding rate for a C/PF is pretty poor. He's a weak rebounder so far in his career
