People sometimes don't work out. Or they come up short.

Billups has never been a head coach.
Hammon has never been a head coach.
MDA has bounced around the league.

How could we possibly know with certainty if someone is a good fit just from interviews?

Nah, the Vulcans have the Nards to fire a women if they wish to. If she came was good at what she did and performed above average and she didnt get along with upper management, they'd fire her ass.

exactly. this is just overthinking and adding a completely unnecessary requirement of the hire. Neil and staff need to do their jobs and bring in the right person from the get-go. None of this David Griffin-SVG nonsense.

Oh come the fuck on... it's the reality of the world we live in. She would be the first woman head coach in the NBA. Guess what that means...... more eyes are going to be on her, judging her success. There are going to be a lot of people watching how the men work under her. Are you really saying that things would be 100% the same for her as if she was a man?

the interview process as Neil has laid out is multi-tiered. it involves multiple virtual and in-person interviews, background checks, insight around the league from external sources, as well as player input.

if they actually follow thru with this, it should not be difficult to see if what @calvin natt has said is true. it's actually quite difficult to hide if players tune out a coach during scouting sessions or if the person has a massive ego, etc, or even if they won't be a good basketball fit.

she’s interviewing for multiple other jobs but is also pops successor? Doesn’t really add up. Actually makes it more likely that she’s not.

Well sorry if I'm a little paranoid after I had to watch Stotts for 9 years of the same garbage iso offense and non-existent defense.

Its simple, if Hammon is the best candidate for the Blazers coach she should be hired. If people treat her differently because shes a woman that is their fault and they should be called out on it. I don't see Neil or Jodi as having a problem treating a woman fairly. Maybe you lack that ability and believe others do as well.

Let me restate my original opinion, since it seems to have been muddled with hyperbole from some posters.

I like Becky. I think she should 100% be considered for the job. I was actually really excited that we are considering her. I have been publicly talking about wanting her as coach FOR YEARS. As I said originally, I have a slight worry that if she were to not work out, it would be more difficult to fire her because of the optics than say Billups or MDA, and that scares me because we have a small window of Dame's prime left.

If you want to call me a bigot or a sexist because of those reasons, go right ahead.

She got hired by the NBA champions then won 3 playoff series in the next 7 years, the last one in 2017.

I'm all for her being a candidate and hired if she is the best; but there are dozens of long time NBA assistants with more accomplishments prior to being hired as a head coach.

I don't think you even know what we're talking about here. Nobody is saying anything about her being treated unfairly. If anything, we're talking about the opposite.

Let's say for the sake of argument that she comes in and all the rumors that Calvin Natt said are true. She's just an awful fit right away. Doesn't work well with the players. Doesn't work very hard. Just mails it in. I'm skeptical of this and I highly doubt this would ever be the case, but just for the sake of this argument let's say that this is what happens. The team knows she's not a good fit, but she's the first woman head coach and if they fire her after her first year they're going to get a lot of bad press. So they don't fire her because they don't want to be considered sexist or unfair. So we waste 2-3 years of Dame's remaining years on a coach that's not a good fit.

Now, to be fair, this could still happen with Billups. We might lose 2-3 years of Dame's prime on Billups too, but the front office is going to have no problem firing a guy that doesn't work out. It would barely make the news. It would run on ESPN for one day and be gone.

But just you watch, no matter where she goes, if she's the first woman head coach it will be national news. They will talk about it on shows like The View and she will be on the talk shows. There will be a lot of eyes on this team and on her. And whenever she is fired, whether it's after a long run on a team or a short run, people will talk about how she did. Her hiring and her firing will be national news.

Sure she has an agent and just because she has an interview doesnt mean she's not in the Spurs plan? But I het what you're saying.

There's definitely going to be some positives if we hire Becky. I'm hoping the NBA will want her to succeed so we start getting some calls for once

Are the Boston and New Orleans openings more attractive than Portland? If so, the front office better speed up the process to get their top choices.

Well whoever they select there always going be people to judge the hire that's normal. If it's MDA then going question about the defense end and some will it's lateral move from Stotts. Billups get hire there going question his character from the past or he hasn't been head coach or Becky is hire there will be spot light from day one or there rumors on her work ethic. But doesn't matter who the coach if don't have the right personnel that fits what the coach wants to do. Some people think we had a roster should go far in the playoffs but I am one those people didn't think we would get by Denver and we didn't. Just because the makeup of the team and if course how they was coach especially on the defense side. My pick is still Becky because I think she has the fire in her belly and knowledge of the game to be successful and believe this organization and teams need that. But whoever they decide to the head coach I will support that coach.
