In case it's interesting to anyone... I've done a little bit of work with sports franchises and crisis PR, I'm far from an expert but likely would've been similar work to what went into this...

The name of the game is to get through it without exacerbating the situation or giving anyone anything super meaty to cling to, and I think, largely they did that today. It wasn't perfect, I actually think a few of the ideas that were mentioned on BE (ex: addressing sexual assault victims, etc.) could have potentially been woven in to score a point or two with the wokest of our fanbase, but scoring points really isn't the main goal here -- it's secondary at best. You're trying to address the issue while saying as little that can be leveraged against you later as possible.

Neil's "you'll just have to trust us" response was without question the weak point in the whole thing. I cannot imagine that's how it was supposed to come out (if it is, their PR writer should be looking for a new job ASAP), but Neil certainly looked nervous and it's possible that it came out of his mouth different than as he'd intended. Unless things over there are just completely in shambles, I cannot imagine they wouldn't have prepared for that question, so to have that be the answer is more than a little mind-boggling. It was such a weak answer, in fact that I think the idea of the organization posting some amount of report/validation of their due diligence on the website (so long as it didn't fan any flames) is probably a good idea. It'd obviously be redacted to all hell or scripted in such a way to say nothing salacious, but the fan in me would like to believe that they actually DID the due diligence that they claim to have done, and I think it would go a long way in calming down fans who are upset at the lack of transparency.

At the end of the day, you want the discussion behind you, mostly so you can address any and all future questions (so long as nothing *new* occurs) by simply saying that you've addressed it and are now focused on basketball. It won't please everybody, but I'm guessing the team is confident in the size of the fanbase that they're not too concerned about any material impact on the bottom line. I'm not sure why they cut Quick's question off, but I do think it stands to reason that they might've wanted to make sure Chauncey's responses to the situation were pre-scripted just to make sure he didn't go off the cuff and say something he'd regret or be misconstrued (hence he and Neil being so upfront about all of it).

It wasn't perfect. It wasn't pretty. I agree with those who are bummed for Chauncey -- as someone who stumped for him to get ANY HC job for years now, I'm very excited that he's OUR coach, and sad he didn't get to have a 'rah rah' presser for his intro. But I think they did their job today. As others have said, winning will cure a lot of ills and mistrust.

Maybe this is helpful insight, maybe it's just noise at this point, but hope it helps frame things for some?

If it wasn't for his baggage, Billups would be a great choice for Blazers' coach. What's that you say? He is? "Baggage" only holds certain people back?

Really? When people invoke variations on "2 wrongs make a right" aren't they asking to have their arguments judged?

Rasta you conveniently spoke of only half the facts. You cant end it with he was accused. Stop omitting facts.

    Billups was accused. Fact.
    He denied it. Fact
thecaccuser and accused came to an agreed settlement. Fact

No one else needs to know anything more and your stance that its neglegence to not ask just shows how invasive you are being.

    NDA’s exist for a reason.
Not everything must be explained to yours or anyones satisfaction when it was a private affair settled by two adults.
Get your nose out of thier settlement.
The only negligence here is asserting that its negligent NOT to ask.

have a bit of respect. Just a little bit. Get out of thier personal lives from 20 years ago.

No one has the right to be upset because they didnt get the answer they want.

    Let me correct that.
    They have every right.

And they also have every right to look like a complete asshat drama queen national inquirer news spreader.

Which is kinda what your posts are reading as. Somemone who feels entitled to know about other peoples lives from m20 years ago. You are entitled to nothing regarding this. Neither are the reporters you are supporting.

Please exert a bit of dignity and respect.

    just watched the video

Olshey was OK and actually managed to repress condescension and smugness. Some evasiveness and vague responses but everybody in front of a microphone will have some of that. I'm cynical so before I believe any of his words about him knowing he has to put a winning team around Dame, I have to see it. His first task is to re-sign Powell and I have to wonder how much of an impact Billups will have there. I still don't believe Powell will be eager to be a full time SF or CJ's backup. Olshey's #1 off-season priority will be a challenge, especially if Seattle is insisting on financial restraint

Billups was fine in an uncomfortable situation. That being a media amateur-hour with a few limp pitchforks. Some of those questions were worse than lame. I think there may have been a better candidate than Billups, but just about any change in coaching philosophy will be welcome

for the most part, a boiler-plate new coach introduction

the clowns at blazersedge can go fuck themselves....and then demand apologies from each other for unfulfilling fucks. This "I'm-outraged-you-should-apologize for-triggering-me" culture is ridiculous

I was nodding along until I hit that last sentence. You seem to be an inteligent and thoughtful person, but here you are rejecting several of the foundation stones of our legal system. "Burden of proof", "Reasonable doubt", "Innocent until proven guilty"???

If I was Dame, I'd be very careful speaking with Haynes from now on.

I don't see any viable way we resign Powell unless CJ is traded first. I truly believe moving him for a forward has to happen ASAP.

what did you think a out NO actually admitting keeping Dame happy is on him?
And how he basically admitted that some past rosters he built werent contenders but overachieved?

overall i thought this to be one of his best pc’s hes had. he came off as more genuine and realistic than in times past, in my opinion.

You are one of his biggest critics, so im curious about your thoughts on that. :)

Unless something previously unknown about Billups comes out this shit is already over. Anything now is grasping at straws. Hes our coach. Either support or *fart* don’t.

    Sooo with ya.

im even pissed at 1080 the fan right now. Their 15 minute looped headline news reportsdetailing the conference says nothing about how Billups discussed improving the team and only has excerpts about his past. Even their looped news headline is playing into dragging this out.
Ive always liked Isaac, Jason and Mike but man thier news headline made me search the radio on the way home today.

Isaac? Anything he says about the Blazers can’t be taken seriously, as it’s personal to him.
