Philly wouldn't be interested in that, they see Seth Curry as a starter just like CJ or Lowry. So it's effectively Simmons for one of them.

If the Blazers can make another trade happen, let's say for someone like Grant, it could send a message to Philly that Dame isn't going anywhere.

who gives a fuuuuuck about sending philly a message? Dame isn’t available, simple as that. They can get CJ for Simmons if they ask nicely.

Philly would be hard-capped as well

If you want Simmons, and I'm not saying that you do, then you need them to let go of the dream that they're going to get Dame. They don't NEED to trade Simmons either. At least not right now.

they don’t need to trade Simmons the same way Portland doesn’t need to trade CJ. So yeah, theoretically they could keep him, but it’s obviously not working out and is just delaying the inevitable.

You're thinking about this logically though. I don't think Morey is being logical.

What’s funny is CJ becoming a better defender and more unselfish with the ball is more likely than Simmons becoming a better and more willing shooter.

It's truly baffling to me how many fans completely ignore how discounted Simmons is in this debate. Do people not realize that if he were shooting well his price would be insane right now? The only reason were able to discuss him for CJ in any sort of reasonable offer is because he's clearly going through something that would need fixing.

I've not been able to spend enough time sifting through all of these threads, but I think I speak for most folks in favor of going after Simmons when I say that the need for him to develop and get out of his funk is absolutely 1) necessary for the deal to have reasonable return; and 2) baked into his price.

But think about it this way: if you're trading for Ben Simmons, you're doing so on the gamble that you can turn around his offensive issues. What if that doesn't happen? You're still getting a reliable ball-handler, passer, and creator for others who's all-world on defense. I'd argue that that, alone, is at least reasonable return for the sieve that is CJ McCollum. But what if it DOES happen? You're getting a true difference maker.

As long as we're still trying to make Dame happy and keep him here, what's the point in hitting singles, or even doubles? Swing for the MFing fences.

Give me first team all defense that can guard 5 positions and likes to move the ball over CJ

So this is a pretty classic example of not understanding that you hardly get any value back as the team facilitating a sign and trade. Maxey just by himself is probably more value than the Raptors could expect for facilitating a Kyle Lowry sign and trade. So like someone else said, we would still need to send picks to the Sixers and most likely they would probably just want CJ and picks.

yeah....plus, I think CJ and a collection of draft picks for Simmons would at least convince Dame to wait till the results of next season's playoffs

    Dame
    Powell
    RoCo
    Simmons
    Nurkic

setting aside the mesh of Simmons and Nurkic, that certainly looks like a unit with much higher upside than last season's stagnation

besides all that, Portland isn't going to be able to turn things around with just one move. They will have to do more

if Simmons even becomes a passable offensive threat, he's a perennial All NBA caliber player who is 25. The ceiling and the potential for him to reach that ceiling are far greater than anything you can HOPE from CJ.

This is the kind of risk we need to take at this moment.

I don't understand the love for someone like Grant over Simmons when discussing CJ deals. Grant has been a role player his whole career who just now got forcefed the ball every possession. Sure he put up 20 a game on meh efficiency, but he also led his team to the worst record in the East. That's not the kinda guy who go after if you want to show Dame you're all in. Now if we can land him without giving up CJ, that's another thing.

Call me crazy, but I think the way you handle the Nurk/Simmons fit is to put Simmons on the ball more. It's how MIL really unlocked Giannis and if we can get Simmons out of his own head and looking to score more, I think you could see similar results (could also allow Dame to expend a little more on D too). Let Simmons and Nurk run PnR sets with a desire to ALWAYS get shots at the rim. Nurk is a good enough shooter to keep pick & pop possibilities at least a threat, but hard rolls, hard drives off the screen, letting Simmons make distributing decisions with Dame, Roco and Powell as spot-up, floor spacers, is probably the right way to play that.

Obviously you can't take the ball out of Dame's hands every play, and when Dame is running things, screens from Simmons sets us up to get some pretty crazy mismatches (another MIL tactic). I know Chauncey talked a lot about giving Nurk more attention, but giving Simmons a lot of opportunities to get out of his funk could be key...

Yeah, and also Nurk shot 40% from three last season. Obviously the volume was low but I don’t see any reason he couldn’t have a Gasol like trajectory where he develops into at least an average outside shooter. His form and touch are there. It’s all mental with him (just look at the inconsistencies of his free throw shooting year to year) and no one will benefit more from the addition of Billups than him.

He has also looked extremely average on the Olympic team. Meanwhile Keldon Johnson looks like a stud.

I was just saying he’s already at that level, so you are correct. I wasn’t trying to correct you. My brain gets muffled
