I just cannot fathom how "Dame is demanding strong moves to compete for a Championship" and "Lets sign Melo for another year" can possibly be a consideration at the same time?

Keeping Dame happy is what every other conversation seems to be about.

Melo and Chauncey go way back....Melo is super cheap and we need his bench scoring...no problem bringing him back for what he gives you...Dame loves the guy...

Sure bring him back but you simply cannot continue to play him the minutes he has been getting.

We're not getting a better bench player with 2 mil and change than Melo or a better lockerroom guy...Chauncey is the reason I think Melo will be back and Chauncey knows Melo's game as well as anyone having been his pt guard in Denver...I think we'll see younger rotation players than last season this time around but Melo is a bucket and a clutch bucket more often than not...no matter who you put on the floor they need to play defense on a string including Melo...he either makes that effort or gets vastly reduced minutes in my view ..

Then we should get Tayshaun Prince - because, after all, he's why the Pistons took Darko instead of Melo.

you lost me there Rasta....we should get Batum, not Prince but both of them are twice the price of Melo....Batum made Enes Kanter money with the Clips.....about twice what we paid Melo....we need cheap bench talent at any rate...we have to pay Norm as it is and any minimum guy who can get you 15 pts a game off the bench is an asset.

I'm just saying Tayshaun is probably as effective as Melo these days.

We seem to be in the minority on this. He's still a fantastic clutch late game shot maker. That alone is worth bringing him back. Dame's the best closer in the game, Melo brings a Big Shot Bob ability to the Blazers as well. He's not hurting the cap, and he's 100 times better than an unproven bench warmer. Bring him back.

this was Melo in the clutch this season:

    upload_2021-7-28_8-33-16.png

a 31% FG percentage, and 1.4 more FGA's than points. Melo was un-clutch in the clutch

I think you bring Melo back as a veteran leader, who has respect around the league. At the same time he has to understand he will not be getting 20 minutes a night and might have some DNP-CD.

If you don't count Haslem, he's the second oldest player in the league after Iguadala. I think he's fine as a 10 or 15-minutes-a-night guy who you maybe leave in longer if we've got loads of injuries or he's having a great night because of a particular matchup.

The problem is I don't see him accepting that role. Look at his game log: https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/anthoca01/gamelog/2021

There wasn't a game all season where he suited up and played less than 15 minutes. We need him to be ok with a 10 game stretch of DNP CD. I doubt that happens.

Fuck no, if olshey re-signs Melo (or Kanter) he should be fired on the spot.

Got to disagree with you there. 11 and 12th men on the roster at vets minimum. I'm good with that.

People seem to be forgetting how well they played much of the season. Kanter was amazing on the boards. He had a bad series vs. Denver in the playoffs. Wasn't the only one who was inconsistent. Those two at minimum contracts is a good move. WAYYYY better than a couple clueless G Leaguers.

just for reference, these were the players who played for minimum contracts this season (not a complete list}:

    Marc Gasol
    Carmelo Anthony
    Dwight Howard
    Udonis Haslem
    Jared Dudley
    Nicolas Batum
    Wayne Ellington
    Jeff Green
    E'Twaun Moore
    Markieff Morris
    Reggie Jackson
    Bismack Biyombo
    Hassan Whiteside
    Kent Bazemore
    Taj Gibson
    Mike Muscala
    Matthew Dellavedova
    Langston Galloway
    Tyler Johnson
    Cameron Payne
    Jahlil Okafor
    Raul Neto
    JaKarr Sampson
    Willy Hernangómez
    Harry Giles
    Torrey Craig
    Dwayne Bacon
    Monte Morris
    Kendrick Nunn
    Drew Eubanks
    Wenyen Gabriel
    Terance Mann
    Nicolas Claxton
    Luguentz Dort
    Daniel Gafford
    Justin James
    DaQuan Jeffries
    Isaiah Hartenstein
    Blake Griffin
    Ersan İlyasova
    Jordan Nwora
    Andre Drummond
    Patrick Patterson
    Dewayne Dedmon
    Ben McLemore
    Jabari Parker
    DeMarcus Cousins
    Rondae Hollis-Jefferson
    Damian Jones
    Moritz Wagner

if the thinking is that Melo is the best Portland can do with a minimum deal, it's bad thinking. Every single off-season, several players better than Melo sign for the vet minimum. In any event, if the Blazers make the mistake of bringing Melo back, they should not do it no earlier than the beginning of training camp; and that's too early

But they don't sign for Portland and yes Melo and Kanter (Who is not on that list) put up better numbers than most of those players. Also some of those players were playing to get a better contract and won't be vets minimum next year. Are we really comparing Carmelo Anthony to Dwayne Bacon, Drew Eubanks and even Harry Giles? Really?

if neil olshey brings back carmelo, he may as well bring back kanter, so billups can play them together like terry stotts did

we need to improve our defense and it starts by not bringing those guys back

I absolutely hated having Carmelo on the team last year but if Neil isn't making any legacy protecting promises and Chauncey has the backbone to use him as a mentor and situational scorer... he's a good value at the vet min. I think Chauncey has the backbone to play Nas and DJJ (if they're still here) in front of Melo and only give Melo the time that makes sense and if Chauncey is dedicated to making this team strong defensively giving Melo more than situational minutes won't make sense.

I'm glad there could be a bunch of impact players trying to boost their value for next off season that we can get for a minimum contract and hope we do it. I'm not saying that I definitely want Melo back, I just won't think the sky is falling if we re-sign him... now dedicating a spot to Kanter at anything over the minimum would make me mad because if we give him more money, there will be more of a likelihood he will play plus if both return the roster starts to look far to similar to last season's.
