Day 15 in the books! Working everyday can wear ya out, but this has been a blast. These people and culture here are amazing!
Something special about Pacific island people....they learn to coexist without so much social aggression. The worst thing you can do in Japan is make someone feel bad about themselves...lose face. Here it's what folks do for breakfast. I drove Japanese students on a tour once a week around the Big Island of Hawaii when I was teaching at the Japanese college in Hilo...never had one problem...one incident or heard any students argue.....wish my Jr High students in Hilo were that easy to be around
Of course their samarai culture and warlord history was tribal and could be aggressive just like Medieval Europe but since WWII they are an extremely peaceful people other than the Yakuza organized crime segment of society...all in all it's really safe to walk around Japan late at night most everywhere....can't say that about Oakland...They are an extremely paternal society...but young Japanese are bucking that trend more and more
you won't ever see Karens flip out in a store over mask rules...you'll never see road rage there or much bullying or social confrontation. there's really no comparison between living in Japan and living in America...lot of roid rage like behavior here...seems a lot of people who've only lived here can't see it for what it is more often than not...it's become the norm unfortunately
I'd also say that Japan has a history of being very aggressive against foreigners (not arguing the validity of it). My sister stayed in Japan for a year, and she was treated with much disrespect.
My Best Friend has been all over the world, and he states ,Japan is his favorite place to visit. Absolutely loves it, People, culture, food.
was not my experience at all....I've spent a lot of time there...had a Japanese girlfriend, etc...over half my life on Pacific islands from Hawaii to Japan Okinawa and mostly Taiwan..there's a marked difference in aggression from here..sorry your sister had a bad experience...I don't know of anyone else who felt that way and I have friends that still live there ..some for decades now...Japan like anywhere has mentally ill people..bipolar people...my take is on their society as a whole and not their nut job criminals that pop up now and then...Japanese inflicted deaths are almost always suicides...usually for academic or business failures.
Sure, you can find assholes everywhere, but there are absolutely more in America. I see it on the streets, the grocery store, the malls, schools, games, and even at tourist attractions. Pathetic really.
you won't see young Japanese thugs beating up old white women because they are white in Japan....you see thugs in America beating up 70 year old asians for no reason..
Not defending it by any means, but there's a huge difference between Asian and Western countries that doesn't get much mention: immigration. Everyone flocks west. Asian countries are significantly more homogeneous, which eliminates a lot of the social unrest. For example, you could easily say the same of China [as of Japan] for the most part, but look at their treatment of ethnic minorities.
Japan and Taiwan are democracies...China just invaded northern india, conquered Tibet back in the day and is far from a democracy...not really a fair comparison although asian public life is generally more peaceful than western culture..native americans can talk about what happens when Europeans flock to the new world....our own history of slavery and genocide amongst the natives hardly withstands scrutiny
The people here have been so unbelievably polite and nice. Got to get out today really for the first time….
