Only if I get to punch him in his punchable face. (And he can't punch me back.)

Sure. Or even same deal for Anderson, as far as that goes.

Trading first round picks lotto protected or not for role players isn’t a very good strategy. Those are assets that could be used for bigger trades, if not to fill out a roster with young, cheapish talent.

I just read that Cleveland earlier turned down multiple (2?) late first round picks for Nance.

pretty dumb of them tbh lol. Reminds me of the magic when they turned down a similar package for Gordon, only to trade him for less a couple months later.

I will say if the Blazers could trade for Lauri Markkanen with just using future picks, and not touching core role players, i'd do it in a second. IMO he just needs a change of scenery. He has the ability to really help a team, now.

guys that “just need a change of scenery” shouldn’t cost a first round pick imo. If we’re giving up first rounders it should be for proven vets that are impact players, if not all stars. I just don’t think a Markkanen, or a Nance, or a Kyle Anderson would make a big enough difference to sacrifice the opportunity to grab an all star caliber player if/when one becomes available later.

I'd rather take the chance on Bagley for a first round pick + DJ than gamble on an RFA like Lauri. Stats are similar but they have different skillsets. I think Bagley has a higher ceiling and probably more attainable for cheaper.

I get what your saying. But if you can add a quality player NOW, before training camp, just feel it has more value to the team, than at the deadline. And could help the team get off to a better start. Sure! You're mortgaging the future for today, but isn't that what ALL the contenders are doing?

Not so sure on that. I think the Kings would want, significantly, more compensation for Bagley.

yeah but they’re doing it for impact players not reclamation projects and role players. I have no issue “mortgaging the future” but it’s gotta be for players that are worth it. Markkanen is not the difference between a championship.

Bagley is a RFA after next season, guys in that situation with minimal production don’t fetch first rounders. Sacramento will probably have to settle for a second and maybe another younger player. I’d actually want Portland to look at a trade for him just for that reason. That’s the type of move we could/should make.

the roco deal was a really stupid overpay in hindsight.

ended up being Isaiah Stewart (who is projecting to be a quality starting level big) and Sengun (who might be the steal of the 21 draft) + Ariza for Roco.

Even if we blow it up at the deadline, we aren't recovering TWO first rounders for Roco. Woulda been OK if Roco ended up being the final piece to a title contending puzzle, but we aren't any closer to that now than we were when we first acquired him.

I think Markkanen is underrated as a player. He was on an ascending plain till Boylan screwed everything up.

I like Markkanen in a vacuum too, I just don’t wanna give up a first on top of paying him 10m+. I’m guessing that’s the holdup with teams as well.

Could be. I think he will have to take a minimum deal and & prove his value.

But we really don't know the Blazers won't be contenders. Maybe they will be. Everything is an educated guess right now. A lot of the main contenders have flaws as well. Injuries play into it as well. Maybe RoCo ends up being a key piece when it's all said and done. I like to give the Broncos story, because after that awful loss to Jacksonville in '97, many thought it was time to move on from Elway, and break the team up. They didn't, and the rest is Super Bowl Glory.

I have a harder time with the fact that the Rockets got Christian Wood for Ariza and the 2020 pick and still had the 2021 pick afterwards. I'd rather have Wood than RoCo. All of that said, the deal was done and now we have RoCo who is a quality contributor and with a focus on defense and ball movement on offense, he might pay even more dividends this upcoming season.

It is 99.999999999% sure we won't be contenders. Sure, hell could freeze over, but it is incredibly unlikely.
