Cj wil start to start the season. But if we have a rough go i hope billups makes the call. Its almost too obvious of a move to balance the rotation more.

I see a 0% chance CJ comes off the bench for us.

It’s obviously not going to happen.

But I think the time to do it is now — before the season starts. Let him get used to playing with the second unit in practice and stuff. Not like he needs to practice crunch time minutes with that lineup. He’s already used to the players that will close the game.

It is also probably a softer blow than starting the season with one lineup then yanking him up. Instead CB can say, “hey this is what I wanted to try going into the season, let’s see what happens”.

It won’t happen but it should.
If you don’t think it helps us we have a fundamental disagreement about basketball.
Just to start, it solves the size of the our starting lineup and replaces a negative defender with a plus defender.

For the first 6 minutes or so at the very start of the game. After that, all of the lineups start to shift anyways. I don't see it giving us some great balance in those few minutes at the very beginning to make some huge difference, personally.

there are workarounds that Chauncey can implement without having to change starters.

and if norm at SF is a size issue, then why not move HIM to the bench?

    i dont disagree at all

so because you think it wont help, it shouldn't be a thought?
    Lol.

most people think it will help if cj comes off the bench.
Not everyone has to think like you…

i don't get why people continue to harp on this as if moving CJ to the bench is the end all solution to our roster imbalance issues. And here are CJ's thoughts on coming off the bench. Hell, CJ already leads the 2nd unit and there's a lot of staggering of minutes with him and Dame as is. I don't see what the big benefit would be by having him wait 5 minutes before getting in.

The main issue here is that our SF is 6'3. That's not a CJ issue-- that's a Powell issue.

    it ain't happening.

I disagree. He’d see *a lot* more time against backup players except in the 4th quarter. That’s when lineups start to change to “closing lineups” rather than “strict rotation”. For the first 3 quarters it would be a significant imbalance in my opinion.

Because I prefer having a lockdown defensive unit personally. “Defense wins championships.”

And I like Nance Jr. playmaking ability more with Norm / Dame than CJ / Dame. I think Nance and Norm will be great together.

i think it would make a decent difference. The key being having more defenders start, to not let the opposing team get a confident feeling out of the gate.
Powell can still score but would be a significant defensive upgrade at the two over cj.

im kinda suprised. From the moment we got Norm the talk was how to get cj to come off the bench. Why would that be a discussion if people didn't think it would improve things?

then the solution is to trade CJ, not move him to the bench with whom he already plays a ton of minutes. By moving him to the bench, you are:

    1. hurting his ego (which matters)
    2. further staggering with Dame and removing any chance of synergy between our two best players.
    3. forcing him to become more me-first as a bench player than he already is (Do you recall how Melo reacted coming off the bench last year? he didn't even look to pass the ball)

I want to see what Chauncey can do with Dame/CJ first. Terry was horrible at maximizing their talents and they often just took turns rather than playing off each other. It also highlighted this notion that they need to be staggered-- I don't agree with this. I think we need to run the right kind of action to make the most of each of their skills to the point that with both on the floor together, we are far better than each one individually.

And if you think defense is an issue, go back to 2018 when we were top 10 with those two starting in the backcourt as always. It's because we had plus defenders in Moe/Aminu/Nurk that year and a bench that was also decent defensively. The issue now is our SF is 6'3 instead a good defender like Harkless. That sounds like it's a Norm problem-- not a CJ problem.

Who starts is only important if you suck at defense...we'll probably stagger the 3 guards throughout the game enough that we won't be small at the SF position for chunks of games..by Xmas we'll sort of know what our starting unit looks like...if it's not working you turn CJ into a Jamal Crawford bench scorer and he has to live with it...will depend on whether he can become a two way player...Norm has that locked up at this point...he is a two way player...I think Chauncey will reward the guys who become two way players over the ISO ball guys.

    And one more thing...

If you're gonna pin all our defensive issues on CJ, what is the point of sending him to the bench if you still play him the same # of minutes?

It's not like our bench is filled with defensive stalwarts who could compensate for him. If anything, playing with Roco/Nurk would help more than playing with Nance/Zeller

Trade grades are meaningless but Zach Harper gave Portland the highest grade among the three teams.

because other benches have the same issue...playing defense against starters is different than playing against the bottom of the rototion

so you want our second best player playing 25 minutes off the bench?
