i think many people are trying to drop the big three. Dish, dtv and comcast.
    dish just dropped root.

I had to change and purchase direct tv. Because Root is having contract negotiation issues with many providers.

like many have posted, id much prefer to pay the Blazers directly for a streaming service or something.

I think some of this just takes time.
Ultimately I also think you will get that. Blazers make a bunch of money from tv deals. They have to work out a way to provide that and not lose revenue.

oh i get it. But i personally much preferred the sports nw channel they had. It was accessible pretty much with any format desired.

things do take time but streaming has been a thing for years now and you would think with the tech savvy Blazers, they would be further along on this.

Yeah I think they were losing money because it was way too easy to pirate. They realized this and had to draw back. They’ll figure it out.

Understand who owns it. Mariners and Warner media.
Portland might get another major league team someday? Being in position to corner the entire Northwest isn’t a bad move.

    for how long?

Dish used to carry Root, but when the contract expired, that ended. When does the contract between Root and Direct TV expire? Those carriage contracts are usually only 3-5 years

Tough thing is, the Blazers don’t own the rights to the streaming once a deal is done. ROOT now does, so it’s on them to get the streaming up officially if I’m not mistaken.

gotcha. Im thinking the Blazers could create their own streaming app not reliant on a 3rd party provider?

I’d have to go back and look at when we went from FSN to CSN. Since then, roughly 15 years to my recollection, we were unable to watch Blazer games unless they were on TNT/ESPN/ABC.
My kids and wife had to go to my in-laws to watch games. So we as a family are ecstatic with the move……as are a TON of DirecTV customers.

Which would be a fantastic option….IF they owned the rights. If we could do that, there would be no need for a broadcast deal with a network. But I remember hearing in a meeting somewhere that the old school “sit down in front of a TV” viewership was 10-1 vs streaming viewers. Who knows, definitely not me, but maybe the streaming pay-per-view option might return? Big picture the NBA has to approve all of it and they want that broadcast feed for their LeaguePass as well. A lot goes into this shit, WAY above my pay grade, but it isn’t as simple as the Front Office “doesn’t care about the fans” scenario.

i think what they are missing is most of the sit down at a tv people can still stream with all the new tvs that take apps.
I hope anyhow. Last tv i just bought did not accept all apps. Had to get a firestick to add the dtv app.
But if tvs can accept any app, then i would think the Blazers would still be catering to those who want to watch only on a tv?

the tech on tvs is changing so quick they are more like computers now so im not sure i know what im talking a out but it seems like they are more like pcs in that some will accept some programs but not others.

Trick is to get as dumb of a TV as possible and just hook it up to a pc or other media device.

Actually yes...my daughter in law did a documentary on the basketball fanatics amongst the Inuit tribes and how basketball is huge entertainment in the fishing villages and islands....it's a great movie...they just showed it's first screening in Eugene not long ago...waiting for it to hit the market. Before she took on this project I had no idea how popular the sport was in Alaska

Doesn't Direct TV parent company also own Root? I believe its all part of or affiliated with ATT.

Initially I was optimistic Root would get deals with Comcast and others since its a different company not trying to get a monopoly on the PDX internet+TV as Comcast was.

But if ATT does want to push Direct TV and push the Direct TV streaming apps maybe they will demand super high nearly unreasonable fees in these negotiations. It pressures consumers to ditch Comcast TV/youtube TV/sling TV/Hulu/etc and go subscribe to Direct TV.
