I just wanted to compare HCP to a fry cook.

hard to find the actual figure, but ~100k for 30 seconds is the average for national tv. the cost on a regional network with a niche viewership demographic would have to be a fraction of that.

The Blazers lost money every year during the PA era until McGowen got here.

TV deals like this, no more $10 t-shirts, $25 for parking, etc. This is what running a small market franchise for profit looks like.

I may not like everything but...

This team making a profit pretty much kills any chance of it being moved to a different city.

This deal wasn't going to make or break the Blazers. They will waste the value of this contract on players who don't get minutes probably next year alone.

I'm not upset with anybody here. It simply reinforces my view that they want people to pirate the games.

So I'll no longer feel bad about about directing people to quality streams.

    It's all good.

So $5k for 30 seconds? If there is 1hr worth of commercials that's $600k per game.

That would be $49,200,000 over 82 games.

If it's $1000 (Oregon is 1.27% of the US population) per 30 seconds it's still over $9,840,000 per season...

Why? If anything it shows that a team making a profit in podunk Portland can make an even bigger profit in a larger city.

Because there is no reason for the team to move.

Last two teams to move were the Sonics and Nets. The reasons given were bad arenas and losing money. Here in Portland the Moda has been maintained and continually improved. And the team is making money. The NBA is not going to allow the Blazers to move.

What larger market doesn't have a team?

it's somewhat manageable to make up the cost. but it's also hard to quantify the impact of increasing the fanbase with larger distribution (which would be the main selling point).

but all this is pointless to discuss when the team and league are so antiquated in their thinking.

who cares if they lose money every year when they just turned a 70 million investment to 2 billion in valuation? And the 260 mil PA put into the rose garden wasn't exactly a sunk cost either.

Even with inflation, that is a ridiculous profit.

Agreed. I'm simply saying the ads alone would likely support the streaming fee. This wasn't a smart business decision as much as a typical business decision which screws the many for the benefit of the few.

The Blazers had an opportunity to set a precedent and make a lot of money. Instead, they chose the status quo. Either out of greed or ignorance, there is no way around it. It's a missed opportunity.

    Looking at this list
    https://mediatracks.com/resources/nielsen-dma-rankings-2020/

Seattle and Tampa are quite a bit larger than Portland.
St. Louis is similar sized to Portland, but is known to be a better overall sports town.
Vegas seems to be pretty popular these days, but isn't bigger than Portland.

The thing we have against our city is our timezone and our overall lack of popularity league wide. Not saying that the team is ever going to move, but I really don't think profitability in Portland is going to be the deciding factor. The overall value of a team in a large market is worth more than a team in a mid-sized market.

The NBA would be better off making Seattle and Tampa expansion franchises.

I also kinda wonder if they might make another foray into the north. It didn't work the first time, but I also think they didn't give it enough time.

I would love to have Vancouver BC in the NBA again.

And seattle. The nw division would be the nw again and our total season travel distance will decrease considerably.

Then complain to the team. they will tell you what I’ve been trying to get across here. Nothing they can do about it. #EmailROOT

Counterpoint. It would be a lot easier to watch the team if they were in another city :P

My guy. We get it. It’s out of there hands now. But I think it’s perfectly fine for people to be annoyed with a franchise that has done a decent amount to show they don’t actually give an f about the fans for at least a couple decades.
