A 35-year-old man in Pennsylvania is facing rape and assault charges after a woman was sexually assaulted on board a public transit train Wednesday night as riders witnessed the attack but did not intervene, authorities said on Friday.

The woman was assaulted at around 11 p.m. while riding the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) Market-Frankford line towards the town of Upper Darby.

"The assault was observed by a SEPTA employee, who called 911, enabling SEPTA officers to respond immediately and apprehend the suspect in the act," Andrew Busch, a SEPTA spokesperson, said in a statement.

SEPTA officers arrested the man, later identified as 35-year-old Fiston Ngoy, according to Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt.

Surveillance video captured the entirety of the assault, giving investigators enough evidence to charge Ngoy with rape and assault, Bernhardt told NBC Philadelphia.

The video also shows how riders, who also witnessed the attack, did nothing to help the woman being assaulted, according to Bernhardt.

"It's disturbing," he said. "I'm shocked, I have no words for it. I just can't imagine seeing what you were seeing through your own eyes and seeing what this woman was going through that no one would step in and help her."

What the fuck is wrong with people. They just stand there and watch a woman get raped? They should all be in jail.

I see that shit, I'm pulling the dude off the woman and beating his ass.

This is a common societal behavior though. Everyone thinks someone else will do something. People are afraid of intervening. What if he has a gun? What if he has a knife? Am I putting myself at risk? I'm sure they all probably wanted to do something, but fear or panic prevented them from stepping in.

There was a TV special on I think 60 minutes or something where they had a big white guy kidnapping a little girl in broad daylight. Almost everyone ignored it. A group of black teens were the only ones who actually stepped up and were about to beat the dudes ass.

Edit - not teens. Just some badass dudes.

Chris, I do think it's easy to say "well I would have done something. I would have beat the shit out of that guy," but you really only have to look to our own city for an example of bystanders losing their lives because they stepped in.

Sometimes it's necessary to put yourself at risk. I saved a woman at a bus stop once and got stabbed for it. I worked at a grocery store back then. I got off one night around 10pm and starting walking home, as I didn't live far from the store.

I came upon some weirdo messing with a young woman at a bus stop. She kept asking him to leave her alone and he wouldn't. He was touching her and harassing her. I told him to leave her alone and to leave. He told me to mind my own business and kept trying to harass her. I told him again to leave her alone. He took out a knife and came at me. We tussled. He stabbed me in my shoulder (I still have the scar.) I stepped back and looked at the knife sticking out of my shoulder. I pulled it out and looked back at him and he ran away.

I stayed with the woman till her bus came.

I could have just kept walking and never said a word. But, that woman might have got raped or killed. I got stabbed, but knowing what he might have done to that woman, I'm ok with that.

What's easy is to stand and watch. I have done something as you can read about in my above post, and I would again.

Look, I agree there are some situations where there isn't much you can do, like if some one is openly shooting people. Sure, you'd like to think you would tackle that guy and stop him. Probably not a great idea.

There are times where you can step in. I believe this time, this incident on the train was one of those. There was enough people there to step forward and subdue this guy. But, they chose to be cowards. I'm not going to excuse them.

    You are both right.

most do nothing out of fear.
But sometimes there is a person around who overcomes that fear.

ive done it more than once, with disregard for myself.
its disturbing how many people let fear drive them though.

It's not hard to hurt a guy who is in the process of raping somebody. Just kick him in the head... Hit him with whatever you have.

    This is disgusting.

They didn't even call the cops or go to her aid afterwards to try and help her?

I wasn't even thinking about myself when I helped that woman. I guess I was so concerned for her safety, I didn't even consider mine. I just acted. I don't know, maybe there was fear subconsciously or something. But, all I remember is this woman needed help and I was going to help.

I once tried to stop a man who was hitting a woman. Eventually she ran down the street and almost every bystander berated me. One said no one should come between A man and HIS woman, if he wants to shoot her dead it's his business.
