thing is you don't move a ranch....you sell it and upgrade....Oregon real estate isn't cheap by any stretch...you could probably buy 3 farms in Nebraska for the cost of one in eastern Oregon. My father sold his pub in town and bought his dairy farm after looking to purchase in Oregon, Hawaii, Washington State and Iowa.....he ended up getting more land in his home state of Iowa for the same money.....businesses move all the time for tax reasons or profit....I think most of this is just bluster coming from locals who don't like being the political minority in the state....boo hoo
    would be my response...

i would assume it would be a vote from those who live within the proposed boundary change and if you are right(I dont really know the numbers) in more of you not wanting the change, then nothing to worry about, correct?

fair enough, but its still not like selling a house and moving unless you are selling all the livestock, machinery, etc as well, plus many ranchers grew up there. There is personal value, not just monetary.
Ranch life is like small community life. More than just the ranch owner is affected.

At any rate, i believe if some want a change, they have the right to propose it and call for a vote from the people( not sure something like this works like that). If more people want the change then don't, then they should be allowed to do so. If not, then they shouldn't be allowed.
Let the majority who live there decide and if the minority doesn't like it, they can move.
Thats the fair way to do it.

It has failed in 2 counties and here in Deschutes county they can't even get enough signatures to get it on the ballot.

It's not just up to the residents. Both state governments would have to agree to it, as would congress.

The chances of this happening are zero. It's fun to discuss, but it's in the same category as "What if everyone was required to carry a salami at all times?"

Ranches are businesses. They are easier to move than states.

Yes. I like the state the ways it is. I'm not trying to change it to fit my world perspective.

Again, we have a country of states with borders so that you can move to another one of you don't like your current one.

There is nothing unjust or illegal going on here. In fact, Oregon has many freedoms that Idaho doesn't.

Agian, if they don't like it nobody is stopping them from leaving. Sell your overpriced and overtaxed land here and go buy some of that sweet sweet Idaho land. It's cheaper so you should have a much bigger and better ranch after you move.

Why are we talking about making 7 million people accept a changed state because a few thousand don't like it? Completely selfish.

While I'm sure that there are people across the state who want to 'leave' Oregon, it's strange that Oregons population continues to rise. Also, I'm amazed at how a very small % of people are made out to sound like a huge % of Oregonians.

Why is it selfish for them to want to be under new government and not to want them to stay? Whats it to you?

they have 49 choices if they want to live under new govt...most farmers I know or have known don't give two shits about the suits in govt ...it's less selfish of them than a flat out waste of time and energy to make up for being in the minority politically in your state..and as someone mentioned...the other people who live there might not agree with the few disgruntled folks...they have rights to the govt of their choice as well. If it's that important to someone...run for office..make a difference!

Nothing is stopping them from being under new government. It's right across the border. They are more than welcome to leave.

It's selfish for them to want the whole state to change for their sake.

That's a total evasion of the question.

It's something they would vote on of course. No one is saying a disgruntled few would dictate that move. But why should a county not pursue a change in jurisdiction if it's the will of the people? And why would you assert to keep them as unwilling political captives?

State residence isn't captivity..it's free will... not political, it's territorial. Every state has opposing political representation...that's everywhere. The farm in Tennessee succeeded from the Union and formed it's own "territory"...giving up all civil services and benefits of being a state of the union. That's a viable option but you give up alot of American benefits to go that route...you can't force people who have invested in property, business, etc in Oregon to accept different statehood anymore than you can make disgruntled Oregonians win an election.

So you think individual counties should have the option of voting to join other states? Man I want to be an Alaskan, I wonder if I can get the people of Deschutes County to vote to join Alaska.

It's a direct answer to your question. That's what's wrong with it.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
Because it's nonsensical and unmanageable to let every one of the thousands of counties in the nation vote on which state to be part of. That's why.

If you're suggesting the US dissolve as a nation and every county can be their own freehold, well, propose it as national legislation and try to get support for it.
