Keeping our pick? This might be a Lottery year

Discussion in 'Portland Trail Blazers' started by TBpup, Dec 5, 2021.

?

Make the pick for the Future.....or trade it for 'now'?

  1. One last attempt

  2. Build for the future....one player won't make enough of a difference

  3. Get bad enough to where the pick makes an immediate impact

Lengthy article on Chet Holmgren, but it gives you good insight on how dedicated he is and how he wants to be coached. This type of attitude is one of the main reasons my Draft buddy wanted Durant over Oden. He believed Durant LOVED the game, while he thought Oden played it more because he was big and it was expected.

    https://www.cbssports.com/college-b...th-a-rematch-of-its-loss-to-kentucky-looming/

"In his last five games Holmgren's averaging 19.6 points, 11.6 rebounds and 3.4 blocks. His offensive rating at KenPom is a lofty 137.6 in that span (compared to an excellent 128.5 for the season). The efficiency as of late is borderline appalling. Holmgren's last five games: 21-of-27 2-point shooting (77.8%), 14-of-23 3-point shooting (60.9%). That's an effective field goal percentage of 84% — brilliant. His season-long 73.0 eFG% is No. 1 nationally, as is his 73.6 true shooting percentage. Holmgren leads the sport in win shares per 40 minutes (.320), box plus/minus (15.5) and defensive rating (78.1). He's second in 2-point percentage (75.2%) and 30th in 3-point accuracy."

He plays in a garbage conference and his numbers against the big schools are terrible. Also gives me Bol Bol vibes

True...but he is progressing, and that is what you are looking for in a 19 year old. Plus, he is progressing at a high level with ridiculous efficiency.

It's an encouraging sign, but efficiency can also be misleading. Steve Johnson shot a ridiculous 75% (single season) in college, and that resulted in a decent but not particularly noteworthy NBA career. And I looked it up to see if he still has the NCAA record... It was broken in 2017 by some dude named Devontae Cacok (80%), who made it as far as a 2-way contract with the Spurs.

Of course.....but it is something to build on. I'd rather see that than if he was shooting 48 eFG% with no 3-pt shot. There is no one in this Lottery without some holes in their game. Trying to find the 'unique' attributes.

Who is the most billups type of player in this draft? (Not including any of the top 3 guys since I doubt we’ll be in a position to get any of them)

I nominate Johnny Davis. I know, another guard, but if we’re picking in the lottery we really should just take BPA, assuming we even keep the pick(s)

i watched some highlights of both Chet and Banchero. Chets didn't have any clips against duke if i recall, but Banchero took him to school in his clips.

I think it’s Griffin. I also think the lower of the picks is going to Det for Grant(seems like we have a hard on for him for some reason). If I had to guess we wont rise any higher than 6 in the lottery based on record. My hope is Griffin is there. For next season I see this as best case…

    Dame
    Ant/Hart/Keon
    Nas/Griffin/Hughes
    Grant/Winslow/Wat
    Nurk/GB3

I guess it’s more balanced but still not a contender.

Chet is playing much better now.
Albeit it’s against 0 NBA level competition.
Hence my position has changed from “lol, no Chet”
To “let’s see what happens in the tourney”

yeah. Has there been a more important tourney to pay attention to in this era? This tourney and draft may just be the final deciding factor in which way we go long term. Do we trade the picks for a disgruntled all star? Get lucky to get both picks and trade up to 1 or 2? And go full youth? Trade dame and do the same thing the next year and have something like Ant, Nas, Banchero and the next years top five and go with that type of core? Hope a couple of them pop into All stars?

Griffin is definitely a billups type too, not sure he’s a better prospect than Davis though.

I want Oscar Tshiebwe in the 2nd round, he’s a rebounding machine with soft hands and great touch around the rim.

Edit: Right after I posted this they compared him to Ben Wallace on the ESPN broadcast, coincidence???

    Edit: 27/19 for Tshiebwe

If we came away with Griffin(our pick), Grant(NO pick traded to Det), and Tshiebwe(early second rounder) from this draft our roster balancing would be MUCH better.

    Dame
    Ant/Hart/Keon
    Nas/Griffin/Hughes
    Grant/Winslow/Watford
    Nurk/Tshiebwe/GB3

    I actually like that roster.

if we can find two players like Kuminga with our lotto picks, our entire future prospects are going to change dramatically.

getting that 2nd lotto pick AND hitting on both of them is the only way to increase our ceiling.

davis and banchero are quickly becoming my favorites in this draft.

Davis especially of late now that I've been paying more attention. that guy is so damn smooth on offense but he's a DOG on defense.

I hope Chet is gone by the time the Blazers pick. I don't think he's the player a lot of people on this board think he is, and I really don't want to read all the hand-wringing if the Blazers pick someone else who has a better chance to be a star.
