If Putin has to withdraw from Ukraine I think there is a very high probability that he will launch a tactical nuke just inside Russia's border. While it will be a relatively low yield compared to a standard nuclear weapon it's still a nuke, it will destroy the pursuing Ukrainian forces while establishing a dead zone between the two countries and destroying Ukraine's energy output and economy for decades.

Putin will claim it was Ukraine who used the nuke since it will be detonated just inside Russian territory.

Also since it is inside Russian territory there will be no retaliation from other nuclear powers.

Interesting... How would it destroy Ukrainian energy output?

The irradiation of the gas and oil lines and facilities near the border and the EMP pulse could be enough to shut down the control and cooling of Ukraine's nuclear power plants.

Do you think he has reached the point where he doesn't care if he dies, because launching nukes would mean his death as well, and Putin strikes me as the ultimate narcissist.

Hmm. It's possible. But I don't think the EMP pulse would travel further than the effects of the nuclear blast.

We've tried to shut down cars with EMPs in the past and it is not very successful, to say the least. Like 1 in 100 cars was disabled. 97 were not impacted at all. 2 had blinkers malfunction...

Basically, anything that isn't within the blast radius isn't going to be hurt by an EMP.

Is enough of Ukraine infrastructure within blast radius of a tactical nuke on Russian land to significantly impact them? It seems like the Ukraine would be big enough to avoid that...

I get it. You don't want to get involved.... and there were a ton of people just like you 80 years ago. Some of them are probably still alive. Want me to put you in touch?

Some people need to brush up on their history.
There was a time when it was very very close to "Too Late".
By the time we got in the Japanese had almost complete control of the Pacific. Germany had taken France and Russia.
    https://exhibitions.ushmm.org/americans-and-the-holocaust/us-public-opinion-world-war-II-1939-1941

Over 416,000 American soldiers were killed in that war because we allowed it to go too far.

What do you see as the difference? When does it end? When does Putin stop attacking his neighbors? Once he reaches the Atlantic Ocean?

At some time we have to take Putin at his word. He has said he will invade Crimea. He did in 2014. He also said he would invade Ukraine in 2014. He Did.
He said he was going to invade Ukraine again this time. He Did.
He has said he will invade Finland and Poland. He will!

Nope it's not WW2. That was 80 years ago.

This would be WW3 if we allow this to continue.

He's a narcissist but he's worked hard to make sure he gets paid by all the oligarchs. He loves himself and money so I don't think he wants to die.

    Yet.

There are too many wild cards to say it won't explode into a much bigger war.
