That kind of stuff is usually made public. We would have heard about different candidates. The team usually hires a company to headhunt. There wasn’t a peep. He was just announced as the permanent GM.

@Hoopguru According to an old Oregon Live article they looked into Tayshaun Prince who turned them down, Mark Eversley from Toronto and Danny Ainge...Ainge also turned them down...not sure why Eversley didn't make the cut but Joe was the first choice according to an old article I read..there was plenty of chatter about it...Joe was their number one choice and ended up being the guy...Prince got the first call. More than likely they looked into other candidates as well....it's why Joe didn't get hired right away..after due dilligence they gave the job to Joe in the end...Joe didn't get it right away because they were exploring options..they hired a firm to conduct the search.

Jason Quick wrote that there was no search so I have no idea where you’re getting that.

I wish Jason well ...a lot of journalists bought into the Dame demands to be traded last summer and called it journalism...he wasn't alone but ..this is his recent writing.....Quick announced his departure in a Twitter thread today, the text of which follows:

A (not-so) brief update: I am taking a leave of absence from The Athletic to work on my mental health. I have not been myself lately. Some of my struggles have to do with coping with a series of sudden losses. Some has to do with frustrations of a changing industry and some of my struggles are wrestling with questions that are more prevalent now at 52: Am I getting what I want out of life? What makes me happy? What really matters? After the recent funeral of a friend, “Life is short” keeps echoing in my head. I want to make it count.

I apologize to everyone who has been generous enough to subscribe to The Athletic to read me. I wish I could tell you I will be back, but I really don’t know if I will. I need to rediscover my passion for writing but I can’t do it with an empty heart and unclear head.

I will say that at first I was very worried that the only thing we were doing was getting rid of Olshey and leaving his entire water treading team in place but that hasn't been the case which has given me hope.

Please produce this mystery article that goes into the search.

    Article from OPB.
    https://www.opb.org/article/2022/05...rs-general-manager-joe-cronin-gm-neil-olshey/
No mention of interviews. No mention of search.

    Article on NBA.com

No mention of interviews. No mention of search.

    Article from Woj on ESPN
Portland ownership considered the idea of opening up the job to a search but ultimately was sold on Cronin's vision for the franchise and his ability to execute it, sources said. Cronin has vowed to continue building the roster around Lillard, an All-NBA guard.

No mention of interviews. No mention of a search.

    Article from Jason Quick
    https://theathletic.com/3304872/2022/05/10/joe-cronin-blazers-gm/

"The search that was never a search ended Tuesday when the Trail Blazers removed the interim tag from their general manager and gave the job to Joe Cronin.

Maybe Cronin is the right guy. Maybe he has the smartest plan, the best eye for talent, the personable bedside manner to make the Blazers an enjoyable and fulfilling workplace.

    Maybe.

But how does anyone know for sure? How can franchise chair Jody Allen, or her right-hand man Bert Kolde — or whoever is making the decisions these days — know? There was no search. No candidates flew in for an interview. No phone calls were made to feel out if people were interested. No nothing.

“They were never opening it for a search,” one prominent agent said.

Another agent was more colorful in his disgust but didn’t want to be quoted. It was clear the lack of process was not only confusing but also laughable.

Nobody was brought in to give their opinion of how best to move forward with the draft and free agency. Nobody offered insight into the pitfalls and advantages of giving Damian Lillard a supermax extension that will pay him $51.2 million at age 35 and $55.3 million when he is 36. Nobody weighed in on how they see Lillard and Anfernee Simons as a starting backcourt. Or if it is worth re-investing in center Jusuf Nurkic.

For those issues, there has been one voice, and one voice only: Cronin."

This isn't the same article but it implies the same thing I read. This is from cbs sports. (I'll try to find that one again but there are several...difference is that some candidates didn't want the job...probably given the McGowan leaving, roster mess Neil saddled the Blazers with....others might not have impressed as much as Joe from as much as a phone call. they didn't interview face to face, they reached out and gauged interest from their targets and their agents.)
The Portland Trail Blazers fired general manager Neil Olshey on Friday after an investigation showed that he had created a toxic work environment. Olshey had run the team's basketball operations since 2012, and now that he's gone, director of pro personnel Joe Cronin has been elevated to interim general manager while the team searches for a permanent replacement. According to multiple reporters, names have already begun to surface in that search.

Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports reported Friday that Bulls general manager Marc Eversley and Knicks general manager Scott Perry are two names that have emerged thus far. According to Bleacher Report's Jake Fischer, two former players that currently hold front office positions elsewhere are also in that mix: Tayshaun Prince, currently with the Grizzlies, and Brent Barry, currently with the Spurs.

Eversley has been highly regarded for quite some time and has interviewed for multiple prominent front office positions. He worked for the Raptors, Wizards and 76ers before joining Arturas Karnisovas in Chicago. Perry spent time in the Pacific Northwest when he worked for the Seattle Supersonics. He was part of the front office that drafted Kevin Durant there, but currently works under Leon Rose in New York. He initially worked for Steve Mills but managed to retain his position after Mills was fired. Perry started his career as a coach before moving into front office roles.

Prince is obviously known as one of the key defenders on the 2004 NBA champion Detroit Pistons. One of his most notable teammates there was, obviously, Chauncey Billups, who is currently coaching the Blazers. Barry did not play with Billups, but their careers overlapped, and his experience as a two-time NBA champion would surely appeal to Damian Lillard as he seeks to elevate the Blazers back into contention.

The search is still in its early stages, and there is no telling if the team will be able to hire someone during the season or if they will have to wait until the summer. Given the turmoil surrounding this organization, though, bringing in a stable voice as soon as possible would be ideal for Portland.

So basically rumors when Neil was fired, but they didn't open it up when they ultimately decided to choose Joe as the permanent GM.... or do you not trust Woj either?

Woj fell for the Dame rumors and also ran with it so...no..(Woj and Olshey have been buddies since college) ..I don't trust any writer looking for clicks or riding a hot rumor....I don't trust Quick either...but you form your own conclusions...there was plenty of chatter around this story...you said there was none....you were wrong about that but hey....I'm not looking for a sparring partner...I was just telling hoopguru about what I read. I didn't buy the Chauncey gossip either when he was hired...they all used it for ink filler. Everybody has their own filter for bullshit when consuming media. choices

You can't produce a single actual article with facts. It's all rumors about possible names. I guess you don't care about women or POC getting actual interviews for the position. They just handed it to another straight white dude and didn't even give other people the opportunity to interview. Or prove me wrong and produce one actual shred of evidence that they held interviews.

Again you have some weird need to make this about me....just post about the topic and don't worry about whether I'm against hiring a straight white dude or not...that's insulting. You don't like Jody...I get it. Have fun with that but as far as me...I'm none of your business. You've proven nothing to me with your own speculation and that's what you've got ....speculation. You've convinced yourself of your conspiracy boogie man Vulcan thingy....live with it..I don't buy it. I like Joe Cronin...I think they made the right hire...and wasted no time doing it....gives me confidence in the front office ...you do you...you can dig up your "proof" and make your case to the world ...
Quick's references.....one prominent agent said there was no search...another expressed disgust but didn't want to be quoted...found it laughable.. I'd say these "anonymous agents" were less believable than Chris Haynes and the people cited in the cbs sports article I posted..Quick is the only one in the article that put his name behind his rumor.

LOL..... I'm talking about the topic. I provided multiple articles. Actual articles. From reputable people who work in the industry. You have provided nothing.

Don't play the victim card now after you were the one taking personal shots yesterday. Toughen up.

This team didn't interview any other candidates for GM and we didn't make our free agents go out and see what their value is on the market. It's a very similar behavior. It's lazy. We just hired our top executive that was left after Neil was fired (he turned around and hired a new staff which is encouraging) and we gave Nurk and Ant deals that were far above what experts speculated they would get on the free agent market, without making them shop for those offers with other teams. You can say that we interviewed other executives but that contradicts reports from legitimate sources and you provide none. You can infer that Ant and Nurk got offers before the new league year but you have no proof and other teams would be risking losing future picks.

We didn't explore the vast pool of candidates for GM we just stuck with Joe and we didn't make Ant or Nurk shop themselves we just bid against ourselves like we have in the past. We can still be a competitive team but these aren't wise/well informed decisions. It's better to be smart than lucky and by not exploring every option possible we're relying on getting lucky rather than being smart.

I did fax them a copy of my resume.

You know someone at least looked at it.

So yes, they did look at another candidate.
