Day 188. Multiple Western, Russian and independent mass media reported the possible start of the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the Kherson Oblast. Ukrainian authorities asked to refrain from making any statements in order not to interfere with the military operation. The Russian army continues to focus its efforts on establishing full control over the territory of Donetsk oblast, maintaining the captured districts of Kherson, part of Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Mykolaiv oblasts. Russian occupiers continue to carry out air and missile strikes on civilian objects on the territory of Ukraine. Earlier, Ukraine’s state nuclear operator Energoatom reported that Russian shelling disconnected the last working power line at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Today, Ukraine seems to be advancing on all fronts, Kharkiv in the north, around Izium and Sloviansk in the center and of course Kherson in the south.
Internet is full of videos of captured russian soldiers, hastily abandoned camps and Ukrainian troops taking down soviet flags and raising the Ukrainian. This is all in the north se from Kharkiv. In Kherson Ukrainians have consolidated gains and some info they may have resumed an offensive. Day 196. Over the last 24 hours, heavy fighting has taken place on three fronts: in the north, near Kharkiv; in the east in the Donbas; and in the south in Kherson Oblast. Russia’s planned main effort is probably an advance on Bakhmut in the Donbas, but commanders face a dilemma of whether to deploy operational reserves to support this offensive or to defend against continued Ukrainian advances in the south. A new IAEA report describes Russian activities increasing the likelihood of a nuclear accident at the Zaporizhzhia NPP while decreasing the ability of the plant’s personnel to respond to such an accident effectively. Ukrainian forces have launched counterattacks in southern Kharkiv Oblast and retaken several settlements. Russian redeployments of forces from this area to defend against the Ukrainian counteroffensive in Kherson likely prompted and facilitated these counterattacks.
