Half of NBA teams lose more money than the entire WNBA (before revenue sharing). Is that reflected in their pay as well?
The players salaries are a % of the league income, so yes, their salaries perfectly reflect how the league is doing. The WNBA can share revenue all day long and this is what they get. The NBA as a whole makes money. Because it is entertaining. Because people worldwide love it, buy tickets, buy League Pass, buy merchandise. Nobody is holding revenue back from the WNBA. THe league isnt secretly some massive money maker and the athletes are getting screwed. If anything, the NBA propped it up for a very long time. Which is also fine. But giving out $1M to be nice seems crazy to me. It might even turn people off even more than they are.
But the WNBA is a subsidiary of the NBA. Why is it ok to prop up half of the teams in the NBA but not a fewer number of subsidiary teams? I don't think a longer season with increased marketing from the NBA would hurt interest in the WNBA. I think it would help it substantially. Up to and including making enough money that the NBA may no longer need to subsidize the WNBA.
because the teams of the wnba do not contribute entertainment value to the fans of the nba. Where as losing teams of the nba still have an entertainment value because they play the nba teams that make money. The wnba teams are not playing the nba teams that make money.
The teams in the NBA who lose money play against the other teams who make money. They are, in an indirect way, making the league money. Take out half the league and the revenue goes down. The league as a whole is a huge money maker. There are stars on bad teams who might lose money, who fly into a city and the stands are full because they want to watch him.
And getting more women into basketball would increase the talant pool here in the US. Which would help the NBA as well.
I don’t see how that helps the NBA. Unless it means better women players means better WNBA which means NBA doesn’t have to support it as much?
How would that help the NBA? The WNBA is not new and im willing to bet 99% of NBA fans already know, and are either a fan or not, of the WNBA. There is nothing the NBA can do to convert more of its fans into WNBA fans.
The average attendance of NWSL is higher then the WNBA. Salaries for nwsl average 35k while wnba average 102k. I think the soccer players deserve subsidizing before the wnba players.
Because women coach too. They train players. They can be executives. Great ones. When you only pull from 50% of the population you're missing out on 50% of the talent.
I'd fully support that as well. Though I don't think soccer makes as much money, and the number of players on a team is higher, so there just isn't as much money to go around for each player. But yeah, I'd be all for it.
NWSL has higher attendance and tv ratings compared to wnba. Wnba players make 3 times what the soccer players make even though the wnba has worse attendance and ratings. Hard to argue they should be payed more then 3 times what the soccer players make as is/
Nobody is arguing that. I'm not sure why you're even saying that. I literally just said they should all be paid more.
Until recently US Soccer had been subsidizing the NWSL by paying the salaries of the US National team players. The Mexican and Canadian federations were also subsidizing some of their players salaries but not as many as US Soccer. The subsidy ended during negotiations last year. We'll see what effect the end of the subsidy will have on the league in the coming years.
Looks like your numbers are off by quite a bit... WNBA AVERAGE Attendance 6,721 Ticket price $47.00 https://projectsports.nl/en/what-is-the-average-attendance-at-a-wnba-game/ $315,887 12 players 26,323 per player per game. 36 games per season $936,000 per season per player in ticket sales. NWSL average Attendance: 7,337 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Women's_Soccer_League_attendance Price Price: $20 (closest I could find, nothing official) $146,740 sales per game 25 player roster $5,869.60 per player 22 games $117,392 per player per team. So, judging by your logic, the average WNBA player should be making about 8x more than $54k per year (the actual average wage of NWSL players). Or roughly $432k per year per player. I'd be alright with that. It's lower than I'd like, but that would be alright. But NWSL players should make that much as well, IMO. They are the top women in the world. They deserve a salary large enough to retire on.
But let's not look a gift horse in the mouth. Our goal shouldn't be to tear people down, IMO. It should be to use that opportunity to build people up.
This pretty much says they should be paid more. Not exactly sure the breakdown is correct because star players will always command more $'s. It does point to a need for raises at the base level which helps everyone eventually. I just wonder if the WNBA can ever be totally self sustainable? I personally simply cannot watch it for more than a few minutes unless there is someone playing i have some interest in. At this point the subject of this thread might be doing the WNBA a huge favor in the end. When she ultimately gets released she will no doubt bring with her interest. People like me have never watched her play. Before she was arrested i didn't even know her name. Certainly could not have put her name to a face.
He's not wrong though ... not sure how many people realize but the $75M/year contract is coming very soon when the new CBA gets in place.
