If cities and their government cant protect citizens and maintain some sort of law and order, then people should think about ways to protect themselves and Im not just talking acquire a firearm, but how they can avoid dangerous places. In some cities the criminal has more power than anyone and they know most people dont have any power or protection at all.
There is no longer a fear of getting caught and receiving punishment. Crime is rampant in large part because societal power has shifted from law abiding productive citizens to criminals and those up to no good.
This has always been the case in some cities in the US. The solution is improved social safety net and universal access to education and Healthcare.
For sure those things will help. The increase of crime is crazy and the criminal that enjoys taking what is someone else's or beating someone isn't the type to allow any further assistance to change their ways as many are in it to make big bucks or simpley don't care about brutally beating people, car jackings, house jackings, business robbery and so on. When its apparent that law enforcement isn't as effective in many big cities the criminals no they have the power to take what ever they want as many citizens don't have any power or means of protection.
But if you improve those things, there will be fewer criminals. Most criminals are in those places are in that situation because they were desperate or grew up in it. A very small percentage of people commit harm to others for fun. If you give them other options 99% of people will choose not to harm others. Then police have so many fewer people to focus on. So many of our problems are simply refusing to deal with social problems until they get out of hand. Once it is out of hand it takes a life of it's own.
