Actually, not a bad corollary. Except that Simons is already starting, and trading him would make room for a potentially superior player in Sharpe.

From the day the Blazers drafted Petro, there were reports out of Europe that Petro and Sabonis hated each other and that Sabonis would never play for the Blazers if Petro was here.

Given the choice (and not having the benefit of hindsight) who would you have picked? Would you have given up any hope of signing Sabonis to keep Petro?

    I sure as hell wouldn't!

Simons and nurk for Conley and olynk is such an awful trade suggestion. Let's trade a solid starter for a good backup to our best player? Oof. No thanks.

How solid a starter is Ant, really? 15 PER on 26 USG? 1.6:1 A/TO? 56% TS? Negative BPM? Only starter with a Drtg>Ortg? So far, he seems to be the starting lineup's weak link.

Walter Davis was useless long-term and being a mid-season trade never meshed with the Blazers short-term either. Way past his prime. I still think you play Sharpe at the 3 and have a 3-guard lineup with Dame, Ant, and Hart. How Gp2 fits in is YTBD.
Again if Ant brings back a huge need then sure. But we are already fine now with backup players....once Winslow gets back.

If Conley wants to play behind Dame then he can always take the minimum in the summer. But we have no clue if he wants to.

Why would their GM fly to Indiana to make a trade when he has this neat thing called a "phone"?

Id be sick to my stomach if they trade Myles Turner to the Lakers with Hield for Westbrook.

    In person is more professional.

Plus it sounds cool to use your phone to say “I’ll fly out there today and we can finalize this in person.”

Like sitting in a Starbucks… “Ill fly out there today” and people are like “oh my gosh, that man just flies wherever he wants to. I wonder who this important moneyman is!”

I'd venture a safe bet that GM's rarely meet up in person to orchestrate trades during the season.

Dudes probably trying to wine, dine, and sixty-nine the Pacers.

He wants to make sure Kevin Pritchard is a few glasses of wine in before he says “Oh, Russell? Yeah, great teammate. We are all disappointed that the contracts match up.”

Sabonis was still 4 years away. That is not why they traded Drazen. Petro wanted more minutes.
Plus if Sabonis could play with Sheed after getting a towel thrown in his face, I am guessing he could have played with Petro.
    Most players mature.

Don’t forget what teams will do to try and convince other players/teams.

    Who could forget this gem

The only thing I could find regarding Drazen and disliking someone, was how his friendship ended with Vlade. Nothing about Sabonis disliking Petro. The biggest reason, iirc, that Sabonis didn't come earlier was because he wasn't allowed.

    that's not accurate

the Soviet Union rescinded their rules against BB players playing professionally in 1989. It wasn't until 6 after that years before Sabonis came over to the Blazers. (remember that a fellow Lithuanian, Sarunas Marciulionis, came to the NBA in 1989)

Sabonis kept getting injured in the couple of years either side of 1989...and he liked playing in Europe

Sabonis was drafted in 1985 by Atlanta but the NBA subsequently rescinded the draft pick because of a rule that the rights expired on a pick if he wasn't in the NBA by the following season. Atlanta made such a stink about it that the NBA changed the rule (too late for Atlanta) and the Blazers then drafted Sabonis in 1986 (when he was 22). He came over 9 years later when he was 31
