RIP Schonz we spend a lot of time talking about talent here...well, when it comes to broadcast play-by-play talent, there are two kings for me: Keith Jackson in football and of course, Schonley in basketball. He was able to call the game in such a way that you could see it real time in your mind's eye. And he combined that talent with class and integrity one of a kind, forever in our hearts
Schonz, Steve Snapper Jones, Rice and Wheels are all up there in my "voice of the Blazers" Mt Rushmore but Schonz is the George Washington of the group.
You've got to make your free throws!! Rest in Power Schonz, we'll never have anyone replicate what you did.
Many great memories of watching the game on a small black and white TV with the volume off and the Schonz on the radio. RIP my good man - you earned it!
Across the cyclops at mid court. Bingo, Bango, Bongo. Climbs the golden ladder for the rebound sad. RIP Schonz. He was an ambassador.
Bill Walton is calling the UCLA-Arizona game on ABC today at 11am. One would think he will do some kind of tribute to The Shonz.
Like many here, I grew up glued to the radio on game nights listening to The Schonz. He made the game come alive in my young mind, like I was there. Even as an adult I was thrilled each time I had the privilege of meeting him and exchanging a few pleasantries. He was a true ambassador, generous with his time, and he seemed to truly enjoy talking to the fans. RIP Mr. Schonley. You are missed.
Schonz’s call of the last ten minutes of the radio broadcast of Game 6 of the Blazers’ championship series. Absolute classic. RIP, Schonz. Who was the color guy in this broadcast?
This hits hard. The inceptive and exemplar voice of the Blazers. The architect of RIP City. A legend in his own right. I remember listening to him call games. He brought the Blazers games alive for me. It was honor to get to meet him with S2 at the Moda Center. He may be gone, but he will live forever in the history of this franchise. RIP to a true G.O.A.T. My thoughts are with Dottie and the family.
Served as Mayor of Rip City for over 50 years. He lived a great life and was a wonderful human being. There will never be another like him.
Shonz was still attending games and events in his 90s....do you know how incredibly rare that is? He was an iron man in my view...clear eyed and straight backed, he was fit for his age. Always impressed me and his mind stayed sharp as a tack
Dr. Terry Dischinger, who played for the Blazers in the 1972-73 season and then retired and became a dentist. He also played on the 1960 Gold-Medal winning Olympic team. He is still alive at 82.
