One thing your not going win championship if you don't have a bench you be lucky if your in the play in. This team needs get deeper through at least 1-10 these players needs to be effective on the court. Right now the Blazers don't have not even close. Because there always up by the salary cap so your always try players that takes middle contracts and who are though players usually not 1-10 players. The other route is trade but you usually have to give something to get something. We got maybe 4 players will get players 1-10 Dame Simons Sharpe Nurk. You trade Dame your rebuilding. You trade Simons you probably get to replace him in 1-10 same as Sharpe. Nurk you better have a center that actually that can replace plus maybe get another that productive. So what I am saying there not much there to actually improve your team. Dame only player going get a decent haul the three your not getting there. This off season they need to go and find veterans players that can produce off the bench. Because I don't see a real big shake up with this team. Use the tools that you have try to bolster the bench.

In 2013 we drafted CJ instead of Giannis or Rudy G.
In 2017 We traded up to draft Zach Collins when we could have drafted Bam, John Collins or OG.
In 2020 we drafted Ant instead of Des Bane. Probably a wash.
Then we did our all in moves for Dame, trading a pick for Nance Jr, and a couple for Covington.
We give Nurk a ridiculous contract in years and money. Pretty sure he is one of Dames boys though.

How has any of the above helped us? We missed on needle movers in the draft, and compounded it by trading picks away for vets that Dame wanted and did nothing. Hell, Dame orchestrated the Grant trade that produced nothing. Sure, he scored a lot of points when Dame was out, but not so much when Dame came back. By missing out on all those players in the draft that fellow posters are pining for to get in trade is what has put this franchise into its moribund state. Then compounding bad drafting with truly awful trades is mind boggling and lets throw in a bad contract to Nurk as well.

Now we have this draft guru, Schmitz is it? We want to get rid of all our draft capital for the next 7-8 years to make a "needle mover" trade? Why did we bring this cat in? What is gonna happen is we will get bent over with no lube for players that will probably not fit as Dame is a ball dominant pg and other players like to have the ball a bit as well. Hero ball does not get you into the finals. Every GM in the league knows Portland is screwed. A player maybe worth a couple picks becomes a player worth four because of the desperation. Then, if we do acquire a "needle mover," we have to extend them. Another poster uses the term "treadmill." That is exactly what Portland is on.

Everyone on this board loves Bridges. The Suns stole him being aggressive. But he was the 10th pick in his draft. They identified talent, went and got him, and now he is blowing up in Brooklyn after the KD trade. Point being, we tanked hard last season and hopefully got lucky in finding Sharpe. Did the tank thing again this year and have a shot at getting an excellent player that we will be hoping we can trade for in five years. Let's just draft the player, develop him and keep him. That is the new draft guru's job is. Identify the talent. Let him do it, damn! We drafted Dame, that is the only way Portland gets good players. You have to hit in two or three in a row. And Dame will be playing when he is 40, like CP3. If Dame wins a title, it will be as a second or third fiddle, not as the conductor. Two cents.

Some debate...you cherry picked the last 10 years time frame and even then it was at least 50% by your own admission.

So using this time frame you've choosen, instead of drafting and developing all Portland has to do is convince Free Agents they can't pay to come form a super team with Dame or that some of PDX's dreck and some picks are worth their needle movers. Get on it Joe!

I'm just pointing out that it can be done either way. I'd think that history would show an even stronger correlation between getting players via trade or free agency and winning titles. Those Celtics and Lakers teams were well known for grabbing stars from other teams. And no, I don't think free agency is going to have much to do with the proposed rebuild around Dame. It's almost certainly going to be done via trades by mortgaging current and future draft picks and players for stars. As I've said before, I don't know if Cronin can pull it off, and there's certainly a debate to be had about how much future draft capital is worth versus a theoretical championship run, but I do know that it's a long time since 1977. Making an all-out effort to capitalize on Dame as the centerpiece for a title run at least shows a willingness to do something more than the endless first round mediocrity of the Olshey era.

The Celts wanted to surround PP with a couple Stars, so 07 they traded the #5 pick - Green for Ray Allen. The next year the traded seasoned vets and two future 1’s for KG. That roster in 07-08 was old with the First Big Three and won cship.
Joe told me hes going to duplicate Bean towns approach! Its Dame Time!

I'm not sure what you're talking about. Lakers had Jabbar (trade) as one of their Big 3 along with Magic and Worthy who they drafted. Byron Scott was a draft day trade for Norm Nixon who they also drafted... both are their's like LMA & Brandon Roy are Portland's. They drafted Michael Cooper. Thats the end of my list of who was in their core. Sorry but one out of five guys is not a check in your favor for any of those 5 titles.

Similarly the Celtics drafted Bird and did a draft day trade for McHale... 2 of their Big 3 were decidedly their guys. Parish was hardly a star when Boston traded for him. Things were going so poorly for him in Golden State he claimed to have been considering an early retirement from the game when the Celtics traded for him. DJ was a FA signing that I'll give you, but Ainge was a 2nd round pick of theirs. Again, most of their core was built primarily through the draft and certainly not Hail Mary trades for established stars.

Is there a reason you didn't mention the Bulls or Spurs teams? Also, without question I'm all in favor of Joe doing a completely lopsided trade like the Jabbar and Joe Barely Cares trades. Of course it takes two to tango and I'm not holding my breath on something like that happening anymore then I'm banking my dinner plans on opening my front and to see a 100$ bill land at my feet. Ive actually had that happen, but it's hardly a plan of action.

I mean, Parish says he was considering retirement because of ownerships lack of commitment to winning in GS. Seems like an intentionally deceptive way of wording that, as if he was some scrub that should hang it up before finding his way to Boston. He put up 17/12 and 17/11 in back to back seasons, with 3 and 1.5 blocks, above average advanced numbers.

Hey, I was just responding to your statement that it wasn’t up for debate that most championship cores are formed through the draft. I went back 10 years since that represents current NBA practices. Like you said, half the titles were won by teams with cores assembled through the draft. The other half were primarily acquired through trades and free agency. The drafted teams were just two of the total teams because the Warriors were a dynasty. The other was the Spurs, which I did mention.

I was basically thinking of Jabbar and Chamberlain when talking about the Lakers. They did draft a ton of talent, but they also had a bunch of guys who were willing to play for them as free agents just because of the glitz.

The poster I was responding to stated that Boston had grabbed stars to build their roster. At the time of the Warriors-Celtics trade, Parish was comparable IMO to Jarrett Allen today, which is a real quality player but also a decided step down from star level. Maybe reread my post with that in mind and see if I still come off so underhanded and despicable.
