Not at all what the OP says...if he meant it in a different way/context, he should have worded it that way.

It doesn't matter if that's the only reason. If you engage in predatory behavior or defend predatory behavior you are in the wrong.

To be a police officer in the current system (in nearly any city in the US) you have to engage in or defend predatory behavior or they run you out.

That is wrong, and it causes far too much harm to society.

Sarcasm is not your friend. I decided that since you appeared to be accusing me of "defending" cops killing people, which is something that I neither said nor implied...so I decided to return the favor.

    Good point.
Many do choose though, to try to do good for society. I refuse to discount that and consider them all evil bastards.

in this same context are all soldiers evil bastards, they chose. Some have killed. Many are forever damaged by it. Just like cops.
Both decided to give their life up for our country though. There has to be some compassion for that in my opinion.

I just want to say. We could all do more to be kinder to one another. This goes for myself as well.
We can all complain and argue and debate but we are also the ones who can set a foundational trend of respectable debating that, God willing, transcends beyond this forum, spreading kindness to all.
Hate and anger will never solve anything.

    Be kind to one another.
I post this also to myself. Not just to others.

The ones who don't do evil or protect the evil ones are considered bastards by the corrupt ones though... so it still kinda works...

We should also do more to help the good ones get rid of the bad ones. I don't have the answers and don't deny there is a huge institutional problem. I just think there are better answers than labeling all cops, good and bad, as evil. Or labeling all cops as having evil intent. Its just not factually true.

...very well articulated. But unfortunately common sense and logic often go ignored by some.

For sure. Honestly, probably the best thing to do is start replacing police departments wholesale. From top to bottom.

Get rid of everyone, and only hire back the good ones.

Id be all for that. But it should be a priority to hire the good ones back first and as soon as possible. Reality is no city can go long without a police force to help keep things in line, so to speak.
The longer no one new is hired though, the more of a chance we allow crime to boom out of control even further. Simple police presence stems many folks with negative intentions. Just look at the drivers on the portland streets and see how much more reckless they drive now compared to five years ago.

Well, you wouldn't ever have a situation where there were no police. You'd have a replacement built up and ready to go.

In Portland that would probably be the Metro division of the Multnomah County Sheriff's Department.

Then you start adding back from there with new standards and expectations.

That's what Camden, NJ did, and it worked well.

You won't have a situation in which you have no police, but you'll be understaffed at first.

But being understaffed with police who are actually doing their job with the proper intentions would be much better than what we have now.

Another nice thing about this is the Sheriff is an elected position. If you don't like the cops, at least you can elect a new boss in 4 years.

Thank you ! Glad someone "gets it" ! Blindly and arbitrarily firing everyone then rehiring the pick of the litter without a well thought out contingency plan beforehand, is "horse and buggy" thinking.
