Does the NBA step in if the Blazers didn’t ask them to? I’m just wondering if we complained or if the NBA did this on their own. Either way, it seems like we are trying to force Dame to expand his list.

Honestly think a lot of other team would complain. They don't want a precedent where this could happen next with their star.

    The truth is more nuanced.

Typically the agent (lawyer, consultant, etc) goes to their client and says "Here is the situation, and I think we ought to do X." Once the client agrees, you move forward with the plan.

Good agents (lawyers, consultants, etc) say "Here is the situation. We have 3 options. We can do X, Y, or Z. Option X is most likely the best choice because... What would you like to do?" At which point the client directs the activities.

Either way, Goodwin is most likely the one giving ideas and recommending routes to move forward.... but NOTHING happens without Dame's authorization.

Who's going to walk for nothing? You're not suggesting Dame would right? He's under contract.

And what terms are you talking about? I don't know what the Heat are offering and neither do you. It's a complete hypothetical. If you're asking me whether or not I'd accept two first round picks for Dame, the answer is no. I would not. He's under contract. He can expand his list and we can get a better deal somewhere else.

Yes, but that's got nothing to do with my argument. You're argument is different. You're suggesting that getting something is better than nothing. That's true, but not my argument.

My argument is that receiving a 1st or a 2nd, would not help the new chapter adequately. Same as if we get a 2nd round pick for Aldridge, that would be not be sufficient in helping Dame win a championship. If we botch this, the Scoot and Shaedon chapter of this franchise is already screwed.

The same way it was screwed when we didn't get anything back for Aldridge.

But who is he lying to? Goodwin came out publicly stating Lillard only wanted Miami. Then he claims in the NBA investigation that he did not say what is alleged in the memo to him. So, if he did not actually talk to the gm's, obviously he lied to the public. No big deal. But did he lie to Lillard about it as well?

    But when?

Did he lie when he said he told teams Dame will not play for them weeks ago.

Or did he lie now when he said he did not tell teams Dame will not play for them.

Definitely close to a worst-case scenario for the owners.

If I'm Joe I would get on the phone with Goodwin and tell him to get me a list of 8 teams that Dame would prefer and tell Goodwin that he can even tier the list but that we want to know the other places that Dame would want to go because we want Dame in a place he wants to be and Miami isn't getting things done.

Goodwin lied to the NBA during their investigation.

    First statement
The NBA checked with several teams to see if he was telling the truth. The second statement says:
So Goodwin lied to the NBA about telling teams that Dame would not play for them... It is obvious that he called around and told teams that.

I wonder if this NBA memo could end up hurting Portland? What if no other team now shows interest? It seems then we will be in a worse bargaining position/

How do you figure? If anything this puts pressure on Dame/his agent to be open to other teams, giving incentive for other teams to make legitimate offers thinking they have a chance.

Thanks, I thought that is what I was reading. Sometimes the memo's put out are hard to follow.

my hunch is that Goodwin is saying to the NBA office that he never told teams Dame wouldn't honor his contract if he was traded to a team other than Miami. But I sure recall him being quoted as saying any team trading for Dame would be getting an "unhappy camper"

hair-spitting bullshit obviously, but it's an effective dodge

    The memo said as much:

We interviewed Goodwin and Lillard and also spoke with several NBA teams to whom Goodwin spoke. Goodwin denied stating or indicating to any team that Lillard would refuse to play for them. Goodwin and Lillard affirmed to us that Lillard would fully perform the services called for under his player contract in any trade scenario. The relevant teams provided descriptions of their communications with Goodwin that were mostly, though not entirely, consistent with Goodwin’s statements to us.
