I simply don’t think he’s much more than a number of very effective PGs in the game today. Lots of them are explosive. Many can control a game. Quite a few shoot way better. He’s a work in progress. Damian Lillard is not.
Make no mistake. I’m rooting for the kid to be everything he can be and more. Just don’t see all the hype yet and if it was warranted then he would have brought a player that keeps Lillard here. That’s my take and I’m sticking with it at this point. Let’s hope he proves me wrong 20X over.
OK. My take is that the bolded part of your take is irrationally speculative and ridiculously oversimplified.
Which player did you have in mind? The problem I saw was that teams did want Scoot in a trade, but the players that were worth trading him for also had to have additional Blazer players included.....just to match contracts. And some teams wanted Sharpe included too. Yes, there were a couple of players I would have done it for, but not many. Any other type of player we traded Scoot for would not have been worth it....a least not by the time Scoot turns 21.
I think Portland will be trying to win this season sans Lillard, but just won't get the victories due to being a young team with some promising potential. Portland will not have to tank, the losses will be organic. But they will have some surprising wins I am sure. Getting a top pick next season will be very important to this teams talent level. Hit on three straight drafts and you are competitive soon if you fill the roster properly with vets.
You’re thinking too hard. He’s either worth it or not. Obviously he isn’t YET! Notice I said yet. The people being irrationally speculative are the people saying he’s an All Star talent.
Asjha Jones said we woulda taken Miller at 3 if CHA took Scoot. Not earth shattering, but interesting
I am 100% sure that we could have traded Scoot for OG and Dame would have been satisfied and we would have gone into next season...... but Scoot is worth more than OG. So Joe Cronin had to find a trade that made Dame happy but also wasn't a complete fleecing in terms of value. That trade did not exist.
I would not have taken Miller three. If Scoot was unavailable, I would have taken the best trade available.
Doesn't really matter if its organic and/or tanking the next 2/3 years will be strictly youth movement, imo.
Both Chauncey and Joe know that developing a young new team via rebuild is job security for 5 years at least. Keeps salaries in check and fans adjusted to era without Dame, a top 10 all star. Much harder to attain complimentary players to surround Dame with and contend. So three more years, then they can get risky or start the process all over again? Again, we are the junior training ground for owner, gm, coach and players.
Building a losing culture. Let’s hope it only goes for 3 more years? That would make 5 straight years out of the playoffs.
Scoot will be a good players for sure, but its way to early to coronate him as an all star type player. If it gives you a warm fuzzy, go right ahead!
Jerry Bayless averaged 20 ppg as a freshman at AZ and we took him at 11. Fans were guessing he would be the next Joe Dumars, well, we know the rest of the story. The problem with teams that go rebuild with strictly youth and high picks, if along the way one or a few of them dont pop, then the cycle starts over again usually. Go look at the teams that developed a rep of being laggards for consecutive years.
When you get lucky though and draft a guy like Jokic or Draymond you can put it together quick. Always nice to have a MVP in the second round.
