Would make for some serious unbalanced scheduling. The B1G schools want to be making semi-regular trips out west for recruiting purposes.
I believe Oregon has been clear about wanting to continue playing OSU, but the Beavs are the ones balking at the idea.
I think when they get out of their own emotions about the situation, they'll realize playing Oregon would be good for an athletic department that could use any income they can get. I fully expect the rivalry to continue. Oregon has stated from the AD and the coaches that they would like to.
I've said before that I don't have anywhere near the connections to the UofO I used to have back in the Bellotti days, and even for a bit in the Chip days. A couple of people I knew have departed this life. Another actually retired to Pago Pago...true story but I do have an occasional conversation with a couple of people who know a little about the thinking in Eugene when UofO people said they wanted to continue the Civil War, part of it was sincere, but a large part of it was PR to try and take the sting out of the situation (if you noticed, that was said in the first 2 or 3 days after the move was announced and it generally been radio silence from Eugene about the CW since)) I've been told that the AD knew that continuing the CW, especially an annual home-and-home series, was going to be next to impossible to pull off with the demands of Big-10 scheduling and the reality of Power-5 OOC schedules still, there was a little sentiment at the UofO to try and keep some form of it going. But all that was before the idiotic tsunami of bile and venom that OSU administrators, OSU alums in the legislature, and OSU fans have sprayed at the UofO in the last two months. They've been blaming the UofO for the collapse of the PAC when anybody with a functioning brain can see the lie in that. But the capper was that insane legislative hearing last week when the OSU president kept whining about how the UofO was responsible for OSU's budget issues. She actually said the UofO should pay for the 40M hole in OSU's AD budget; and even suggested that the UofO should pay the full bill for OSU's 10.4M budget for athletic scholarships...for how many years she didn't say, maybe because she finally realized how idiotic she sounded what she didn't deal with, was that OSU's desire for the UofO to be in the same boat...a Pac-3...because apparently that's what would be 'fair'...well, if that were the case OSU would still have the same 40M hole in their athletic budget. In other words, that 40M hole would still be there if Oregon was in the BIG or the Pac-3. Meaning, it's not Oregon's fault I'm told that pathetic attempt to play the victim in front of the legislature and blame Oregon has royally pissed off the movers and shakers at the UofO, including Phil Knight. And before OSU went ballistic at the UofO PK was rumored to be pretty sympathetic. But apparently he's pivoted to some real anger at what OSU has been saying and he's all out of sympathy
This all checks out. I still believe, once the dust settles, the emotions simmer down, that both sides will see a benefit to continue playing. Football is going to be a little more tricky, but the remaining sports are near no-brainers for both UO and OSU in my eyes. Can't think of a reason (without emotion) that would cause the two schools to not be playing in basketball, softball, baseball, etc.
Maybe the Beavs would make more money on merch if they didn't have legitimately one of the ugliest logos in all of college sports. And their fans love that they can wear their hunting gear to games and still be in style!
and, speaking of Oregon keeping the Civil War going, it won't happen next year and Oregon's OOC schedule has been set for the next few years: the Ducks are not going to cancel home-and-home pairings with Ok State, Boise St, and Baylor. And likely not with Utah State. And I don't think Oregon will be eager to schedule a trap game OOC with OSU when it would be their Super Bowl, and they would spend all summer preparing tor Oregon while Oregon was preparing for the Big-10 schedule no Power-5 team with designs on a Big-10 championship is going to schedule two or three difficult games in their OOC schedule. I'm thinking the earliest opening might be 2027
I was speaking strictly about football. There are just different logistical issues about that sport the other sports don't have yeah, I'd think that basketball and other sports will be a lot easier to arrange. Now, both guys I talked to said, in effect, that the anger at the UofO about OSU's actions and words was 'palpable'. So you may be right that the emotions might need to cool a bit even before basketball and other sports schedule the Beavs one thing about basketball though is there are hundreds of teams, so it won't be difficult to find opponents. Same with baseball and softball
Agreed that Oregon could easily find other opponents to schedule for the sports outside of football. What I think both schools will realize once things settle down is that there is probably no other opponent that will have a better combination of fan draw combined with ease of travel. It's what makes the continued rivalry so obvious in my opinion. For football it could be a bit more tricky, but also, having a locked in opponent home/away that lines up with the 5/4 home and away scheduling of the B1G would be very clean. And again, the "away" game is not a travel game, while the home game would probably sell out.
Cristobal just had one of the most epic choke jobs you’ll ever see. Just awful game calling skills. His team basically tried to run the clock when they the 4th quarter just started. Ducks dodged a bullet with that one
I was in a group chat and we were literally freaking out BEFORE it happened. The most Cristobal Classic of Cristobal Classics! So predictable. I clearly still have PTSD from him.
well, I don't know about reveling...probably but just about every Duck fan is happy to NOT have Mario's clock management and that fumble that cost them the game when Miami could have just taken a knee to win...the very same thing happened against Stanford when freshman RB fumbled. Ducks could have run the clock down under 10 seconds and punted from their own 45
Taggart and Cristobal proved that Oregon could recruit. For that I will give them props, but they were both lousy coaches. Happy they’re gone.
