Welcome back Beavers to the bottom of the ... what division do they play in again the Pac -2 -- I joke but i do feel bad for the die hard fans as I wonder why Smith would leave his alma mater to join the Spartans.

Can't blame him. This whole thing is a shitty situation. But with Smith in the B1G it feels like the Beavers are kind of coming along with the Ducks. Kinda...

I’d have to say the chaos of the pac-12 sealed Smith’s fate.

    How is this Barnes' fault?

How is this Barnes fault ? ---- Simple ... well maybe not simple but

Barnes has J.Smith a Beaver legend walk out on his alma mater and I am sure money was part of it but guessing other things like how the Beavers right now do not even have a conference for next year. However your right Barnes is not the only person to blame whoever has the power over there has to take it too. This is the type of stuff that make the Beavers look like the baby brother to the Ducks and almost makes me think they should drop down a division for a year or 2 just to show them they need to step up or get the F out of Div 1 football.

Beavers will be starting a coaching search while they are floating in clouds of uncertainty

the fate of the Pac-2 vs the Pac-10 is locked in a legal limbo. The Pac-10 filings in front of the Washington State Supreme Court telegraphed that the PAC and at least some of the departing 10 teams are willing to fight and their first step would be to file a lawsuit in the State of California if there is an adverse ruling in Washington. I can't say for sure, but what I have read is that the Pac-12 is not a corporation, but rather a legally formed association that is the owner of corporations like the Pac-12 network. And that the laws of California stipulate that the boards of associations are subordinate to actions by members (opposite of corporations). Meaning that the 12 members of the association can overrule any decisions by the board. And the members can vote for dissolution even if the board objects. Again, I'm not sure how accurate or applicable that is, but it was part of the argument the Pac-12 + UofW presented to the Washington Supreme Court; and part of their argument was that the proper venue for a lawsuit filed against the Pac-12 association was California

we've been hearing for months how OSU/WSU were going to sign a scheduling agreement with the MWC, but it hasn't happened yet. For sure it would be a complicated undertaking. How eager would San Diego state be to rearrange their entire schedule so they could travel to a mid-November game in Pullman? And how eager is the MWC to enter into a scheduling agreement with two programs stuck in a legal limbo?

but that's the obstacle OSU will be facing: trying to hire a new coach while having no schedule for the next 5 years. IIRC, making matters worse is that now that Smith has resigned there is an immediate 30 day transfer portal open. The normal transfer portal opens on Dec. 4 and runs thru Jan 2; a 30-day window. But that could mean that right now there is a 40 day window open for OSU players

Bruh would you stay with a company who is nothing but uncertainty or go to a solid place and get paid?

    Dude is human. Lol

There was NO CHANCE Smith was staying at Oregon State with any decent job offer on the table.

Thats like asking why Klieman left NDSU for K State.

From an outsiders perspective: Smith leaving 100% had to do with the dissolving of the Pac12 and OSU being left out of realignment. I don't see how either of those things are Barnes' responsibility. If Barnes had the budget to give Smith $8m/year and retain the assistants, I bet Smith would stay, but that wasn't a reality.

Any way this was a mutual decision with OSU and Smith to part ways?

Nothing to do with Smith performance - just no budget to keep a coach at his guaranteed salary with all the other chaos going on.

I don't think it was mutual. Sounds like Barnes was working hard to convince him to stay

but I'm guessing in the dark room off the AD's office there is some relief that the Beavers might be saving 5M next season on coaching salaries

he's mentioned most as a target. But I'd wonder if he'll go with Smith to MSU and try and springboard from a power-4 assistant to a power-4 HC
