If I squint, I can see an upward trend - Note: Game Score was created by John Hollinger to give a rough measure of a player's productivity for a single game. (40 is an outstanding performance, 10 is an average performance.) I'm rooting for Scoot. With the losses piling up, he's in a tough situation. Hopefully with some good coaching and some solid mentoring, he'll continue that upward trend.
Scoot may be a bust but those of you who think you know he is for sure have no imagination (that's the nicest way I know how to say that). The dude is crazy athletic, he's already shown us that when he's set he can make the three, he's already shown us that when he is on he has almost supernatural court vision and passing abilities, he's a tenacious defender that like most young hungry defenders fouls too much and he has a great attitude. Like any developing prospect he takes steps forward and back but the forward steps are where you can expect his baseline to be in twenty or so games, then he'll take more forward steps and we'll get to see more things the guy can do. Or people can just be super certain and count the kid out.
Consider a guy like…. Steve Nash, with multiple college years…. Jason Kidd who couldn’t shoot…. Yeah… not ready to write Scoot off. PG is the biggest jump to the L at any age with any level of experience. The potential is clearly there. And I’m usually quick to write off prospects in the NBA.
Here are my thoughts: 1). Simons & Scoot should NEVER be on the court at the same time. Both are likely in the bottom 10% of defensive awareness and blow rotation after rotation. 1a). Offensively the Simons/Scoot pairing is a disaster as well. 2) Scoot should be coming off the bench with ~15-20 minutes a night. He need to work in the gym with coaches right now. When he can show that he's a competent player, he can earn more minutes. 3) Shae needs to be starting. 4) Scoot has the potential to be great, but the red flags he had prior to the draft as sure sticking out right now.
With this shitty offense Scoot is leading all rookies in assists per game and scoring an average amount per game. Not sure how that's a bust at 19 years old...
Don’t think anyone is actually declaring him a star at this point lol. But the Kidd and GP comparison is interesting because those guys turned it around. And as @BLAZINGGIANTS said, those guys spent multiple years in college. The passing ability is real, and Scoot seems to be shooting better from 3 as the season goes on. It actually kind of makes sense that he’s improving from 3 quicker than scoring inside. Scoot could stand there and shoot thousands of 3s a day. Scoring inside takes multiple reps of going through the motions, knowing when to explode to the hope when the defender is on your hip, when to score coming off a PnR, etc. For a more modern comparison, his scoring inefficiencies and struggles are similar to Ricky Rubio, but Rubio never had Scoot’s body. Another comparison in terms of body is Eric Bledsoe. Bledsoe was never an AS, but he cooked us nearly every time he played us as as Sun. Did he ever NOT score over 20 against us in those games? JKidd. GP. Rubio. Bledsoe. Scoots final form could be a combination of any of those guys.
I fucking hate this dude plays for the Blazers man.. Makes sense why Charlotte passed on him. They finally did something right
surely we all hoped he would be great from the get go, but obviously he isnt and obviously it will take time and a lot of patience lets focus on a good games rather than the bad ones, weve seen flashes from scoot and hopefully we see more of those flashes, thats really all we can ask for in his rookie season next season, however, some consistency would be needed, cause that would signify gradual improvement (not necessarily for a whole season, that would be really tough to achieve) scoot needs to play as much as possible and shoot the ball as much as possible, just let him play through his mistakes, theres no better practice than in-game practice it would be a different story if we were competing team, so you cut his minutes and shots, cause hes hurting the team, but were rebuilding, so we can afford it
trade grant & brogdon as soon as possible, that should free scoot & sharpe scoot & sharpe need to get a lot of shots, who cares about ayton, duop, toumani etc, lets develop these two guys who could potentially be an all-stars
that assist stat is not that impressive considering there were only a couple of PG's taken in the top-20 picks. And, I'm pretty sure that Scoot is leading all rookies in turnovers too. Also, Scoot is 53rd among all rookie in winshares (-1.6); 42nd in winshares/48 (-.092); 39th in BPM; and 51st in Value over replacement. And, 32nd in FG%; 25th in in 3ptFG%; 20th in FT% those are both disappointing and predictable numbers I sure wouldn't call him a bust, but I think he does have a long ways to go to just be a consistently solid player on a good team.
Solid points. Certainly not *great*, but I don't expect any young PG to be great their first couple years.
I don't think you're watching the games Aldo. The team is a fucking mess right now, no one looks good. When they let Scoot run the offense he looks like something special, not all of the time but a lot of it. When they let Ant ball hog and make Scoot a spot up shooter or a bail out at the end of the shot clock he looks terrible and that's what they've been doing way way too much of. I think this young guy has a lot of potential, his athleticism and physicality for the position are elite, his floor vision is elite, his ability to put passes where he wants them to go is improving, his jump shot is improving. Look at the numbers before this last 7 game debacle. The dude is getting better. I don't know for sure that he's not a bust but he doesn't look like it to me. You do you though and just keep going negative all of the time, it's fucking lame as hell but it's your preoperative to be that way.
not at 19 with no major NCAA experience, nope Scoot has flaws and I think we all know what they are and they are mostly around shooting the ball. Those may or may not be correctable skills; his shot selection can be improved though. I think his other major flaw is correctable though. That being that he was unprepared for how quickly and effectively actual NBA players can obstruct seemingly open passing and driving lanes. Learning the do's and do not's of that will increase his assists and decrease his turnovers. in other words, his scoring efficiency might be a struggle for quite a while but his play-making efficiency should get better, sooner
I'm not worried about his shooting. As long as he's willing to work he'll become at least a respectable shooter. If he's not willing to work hard enough for that then he was never going to make it in the NBA anyway. Trainers are easy to come buy for NBA players. Shooting is like singing or building muscle. Anybody can do it. It just takes knowledge and practice.
totally agree. but busts typically don’t show the flashes a star qualities this kid does show. so it’s more likely he’s a quality player than a bust, imo.
