I think a lot of fans just want multiple first-round picks so the Blazers can be ready in a couple of years if by chance a team wants to dump a star player in order to rebuild. At which point an ending contract and multiple picks might be attractive. Seems like a long shot to me, but it is not a horrible strategy. Where those picks land is still important, but not as important to us.

Oh, no I understand. But the notion for a pick to be unprotected isn't necessarily as good as a protected pick. It's an over generalization. An unprotected pick by Dallas is not as valuable as a top 3 protected pick by Detroit. That was my only quibble. I happen to think it's a pretty good strategy. It's no more of a long shot than keeping Jerami Grant or Anfernee Simons and expecting to excel with the current makeup of the team.

That is where we differ. It seems like a pretty big long shot in my opinion. I do think it is worth trying, but I don't think we should necessarily trade away a good player just to get more picks. We can't bank on it working out. The number of really good players that become available because of a rebuild is small. Plus the player we are willing to overpay for (3-5 firsts) has to play a position of need.

Plus you still need to keep a high-priced vet or two on the roster to match the incoming star's salary. So I would keep Grant for that reason and also because he is not a duplication for our current roster.

I can see a case for moving either Simons or Brogdon. But certainly not both. I can also see the case for not trading anyone because Scoot is not ready and I am fine with our young players progressing while coming off the bench. But after the draft we have to make some moves.

    PG: Brogdon-Scoot
    SG: Ant-Sharpe-Thybulle
    SF: Grant-Murray-Rupert (first-round pick)
    PF: Walker-Camara (first-round pick)
C: Ayton-Reath-Williams- (or Brown or Badji)

That's a good trade for Miami. Between Boston, Miami and Philli - Dame might not get the ring he so very much wants.

Hopefully Miami improving will push Indy, Orlando, and NY to feel like they need to make a move to keep up. We have someone for everyone!

We currently have an 8.3 million dollar TPE, and an 8.7 one as well. The 8.3 expires on the 8th of February.

I really doubt we use either by themselves in a deal, because, well, it seems like we never do. However, figured it'd be fun to look anyways, with the new financial landscape in the league, and the 2nd apron stuff.

Currently, we are 5.4 million under the LT, and you can bet we're very unlikely to go over that. There's currently 9 tax paying teams. I believe there are 7 above the 1st apron, and 5 above the 2nd apron.

I'm wondering if there's a way for us to extract a small amount of value by using our TPEs to get teams out of the tax, or below an apron.

    Some examples:

Philly is currently 4.286 million over the tax. Korkmaz makes 5.37 expiring. House makes 4.3 expiring. They're not gonna trade a 1st round pick to save ~6 million dollars, but maybe:

We get Martin, who some here liked, for getting Philly out of the tax, we get an additional 2nd this year( I think Toronto's, by the wording), and then (I know I screwed up what the protections are), currently Philly has the right to swap their 2029 pick with LAC. We currently have our pick, Milwaukee's pick, and Boston's pick in that draft. This deal gives us the right to swap any of our picks with the better of Philly or LAC's pick.

I'm ready to move on from Ayton. Can't stand this mentality.

dude had all the chance to prove he's actually worth his contract here but instead opted to get paid and go home. Don't want this attitude rubbing off on the youngins.

This puts Portland INTO the tax, which is not going to happen.

Yeah, sorry, got pulled away, was gonna say this only works if we do like a Brogdon-Fournier swap that gets us more breathing room under the tax.

Unless there is a trade where more salary is going out than coming in before it.

EDIT: oops. see RR7 beat me to it.

This is interesting especially with Haynes yesterday.

But I listened to that podcast and Haynes said "teams were trying to get Rob Williams ON THE CHEAP". I don't know what that means but I wouldn't be dumping him for a few seconds or something. At least get a protected 1st.

I am sorry but that Ayton comment makes me want to trade him for pennies on the dollar at this point cause he does not get it and not sure he ever will
