That’s one way to look at it. The other is that Ivey has been a bust so far and the #5 this year isn’t worth nearly as much as other #5 picks. I guess it depends on whether Detroit is trying to tank again or if they’re hoping to make a run.

    Cade
    Brogdon
    Thompson
    Grant
    Duren

That’s a pretty solid starting lineup.

A Magic/Blazers trade involving Simons could make sense for both teams. I wanted WCJ last year. It would be interesting to see him and Ayton play together.

Isaac would have been great 5 years ago, but at this point, he's a salary dump. But I'd take him in exchange for Orlando taking our good but always injured player, RW3.

I'm not sure why RWIII/Isaac need to be in the trade--might as well just keep RWIII and rehabilitate him since he's only on $12.4M. Also I'd probably make Magic sweeten the pot a tick more.

It's less about Ivey as it is about the pick. Though for your troubles, you're getting a lottery level talent just a couple years ago. He's obviously a very talented player. Can he be functional? Who knows, but it's worth taking a shot if you're getting a top 5 pick for a couple of veterans.

Hey, I'd be all for it if Cronin could pull it off. I'm just saying that it seems like a great way for the Pistons GM to get replaced by Billups.

On that note, I'm even more on board.

Boston advances to 6th ECF in 8 years - impressive. Thats why owning other teams draft picks is so important for a rebuild - as the Celtics did in the Nets trade which got them Tatum and Brown.

Blazers did good getting 3 years of Bucks picks and Boston pick all unprotected in the Dame trade. Hopefully we can get a couple more by sending out Brogdon and Grant - possibly Ant or Ayton as well.

2031 picks will be available in July for trades. I know some posters here don't like the idea of picks in far off years - but you have to remember these are like owning stocks. You don't have to wait for a company to liquidate to cash out stock, you just sell it much sooner whenever you need cash. In the 2025 draft we could trade away some future picks to move up or get a star. Or when Scoot/Sharpe/others are getting close to competing for the playoffs we could trade away picks for that last key starter (Jrue/Gobert/Aaron Gordon/etc)

significant difference between the two situations though

Brown was drafted 3 years after the Nets trade. As far as those future picks, the first unencumbered pick is 6 years after the Dame trade. Maybe the Blazers will hit it out of the park with #14 this draft, but that seems unlikely

I see that as a big advantage, not a disadvantage. Boston and Milwaukee this year were at the top of the east standings. Give them a few years of spending deep in the luxury tax, possible repeater tax, lack of adding youth that will peak in ~4 years, keep older players that take up more cap space while contributing less wins each year and then those picks are likely to become much, much better.

If we had more veteran talent now that was taking the step up to contending in the next 3 years maybe I would prefer earlier picks though. Or if I was well into my 70's. But even with these points its not a huge problem as the picks can always be traded away sooner if need be.

One type of possibility I'd like to see is something such as Scoot/Sharpe/rookie/etc players now develop to become key starters on a contender the next few years. We become a more exciting team that is fighting for the playoffs but still needs another key piece. Then in 2029 we draft that last player who is a young stud and gets this team to contend as Edwards did in Minnesota, or Wade did his first couple years in Miami, etc.

sorry, don't agree. Portland traded away the franchise player and the 'best' asset they got was 6 years after the trade....and it's completely unknown how good that asset is. You have staked out a position that the Dame trade was a "haul". It's no surprise to me that your view of the draft picks is so positive. Now, that's not to say I don't have my bias just like you do. But my bias was that trading Dame was going to immediately lead to a bad team, for years; unless Cronin locks Portland into a play-in purgatory.

Also, my bias is that I'm 72 and even if those picks in 2029 are great, the players won't be making a big impact until they are 3 or 4 years into their careers. I'd be over 80 by the time the Dame trade pays off...fuck that

If we're not able to turn Brogdon and Williams into anything, I'm going to sour on the Dame trade a bit.

Brogdon might fetch something but I doubt it will be much. It would likely be from one of the teams that has been eliminated from these playoffs and is in total win-now mode. Best might be a lottery protected 1st

Timelord? I have a hard time any team will pay much for those knees

Its will be easier for Joe to be nice guy and trade both to teams they approve versus maximizing a return for them. Good GM'S maximize.

Anyway we can get Cavs to take Grant in part of an Allen deal? That’s a player I’d like here .

What are the similarities between Morrison and Flagg? I can think of one, and it has nothing to do with basketball.

Flagg is LESS scary to me than Chet is/was.

Okay, now you have me wondering what the similarity is that you’re thinking about. I don’t know anything about either guy’s personal life. My “thought” was that they were similar body types- 6’8 or 6’9 and a bit over 200 pounds. Guys like that can have a tough time adjusting their games to the stronger, faster competition. Flagg’s reportedly amazing and he’s more athletic than Ammo, I’m just hesitant to go all in on the future of a 17 year old as team savior when he hasn’t even played at the college level yet.

I hear you and if I thought Flagg was likely to struggle with stronger/faster competition (relative to his peers), I would agree with your comparison. I think Flagg is more built than Morrison was at a similar age, but more importantly he's a more physical player comfortable with contact. By all accounts, Flagg is thought to have a real solid chance of being an All-NBA Defensive player, where the opposite was thought of Morrison. Morrison was a better shooter, but I'd say Flagg is the better passer.

I also agree with you that you don't want Flagg to be "the savior". You want him to be on a roster where he's best #2 option in the NBA, kinda like you wanted Pippen to be that guy. I don't think he's going to have a Wemby type impact.

Why is it that people tend to compare white players with white players?
