Measure 110 took effect February 2021. People flocked to Portland or were bussed here by other states the following two years.

Except the vast majority of our homeless population has always been from Oregon according to every statistic I've seen. And Portland started improving before measuring 110 was changed (as soon as the money for services started being allocated).

And the states around us saw larger increases in drug related crime and overdose rates than Oregon saw over the same timeframe.

what does it matter if homelessness went down from 21-22 to 22-23 when there are triple the homeless since 2015 and it went back up from 22-23 to 23-24.

Thats like saying, “hey! We were able to bucket more water out of the sinking ship this year compared to last. We should be proud”
But we are still taking on triple the water in the last decade and the ship is still sinking???

    Big pictures matter.

Canby's homeless grew almost 200% since you moved there.

Well since 2015 we've had catastrophic fires and a pandemic that undoubtedly had a lot to do with that rise. And losing those houses will probably keep applying upward pressure on homelessness for years to come.

If the funding that we have allocated to dealing with that rise allows us a more accurate or better count, or even incentivizes a higher count, that will skew the number.

This is why it's so critical to get people into homes that they stay in long-term so that we can get accurate information and better offer those people the help they require.

The numbers that you are referencing simply aren't accurate or consistent counts. And they don't show the reality of the situation in Portland.

I'm honestly really not sure what point you're trying to make. Portland has a homeless problem. Absolutely. Portland has one of the best climates to be homeless in the country. And we've had a lot of natural disasters that have helped exacerbate the problem.

I don't think anybody is claiming that everything that could be done is being done. Certainly what I have advocated be done hasn't been done.

But downtown Portland is definitely better than it has been in the past few years.

Lol. Nice pivot. Read the thread again and you might understand my point. You run too many circle to try to explain it again.

If you were following, someone said they were right where i was Friday night and it was all good. I disputed that based on what i saw Friday night and i provided descriptive details. i the. Got mocked for being a suburbanite and shouldn't even use downtown as my.. whatever the fuck that person was saying….

Then its just a bunch of circle jerking from that point on…

its funny how those who only want to discuss how portland is so great cant handle someone else pointing out it ain't so great and then proceed to belittle them with statements of mockery, When they themselves do the same thing, just from an opposite spectrum.

Oh I'm not disputing that things happen. Only pointing out that fewer things have been happening the last couple years. And that Portland is drastically better now than it was a few years ago.

I believe you experienced an incident. But I think that's probably an incident you could have experienced 15 years ago as well. Or even 30 years ago.

It's not necessarily an indication of a recent trend in Portland.

It may never be back to early 2000s Portland.

But, and this is with my own eyes, Portland has gotten better downtown. Again, it'll never be where it was again, but what I saw in 2020, 2021, and 2022, is not what im seeing (and feeling) when im downtown. To which im there probably 3-4 times a month. Late at night, during the afternoon. Chinatown, pearl, NW 23rd, etc.

2 years ago I felt completely unsafe. I dont feel that nearly as often now.

Thats my anecdotal story. Others will have it differently, of course, based on a myriad of factors. And as long as you research the statistics and where they are coming from, informed decisions can be made.

But anecdotally, I feel a difference there in the last 24 months. And there are some reputable studies done (that lose the slant) that have said as such.

But again, our feelings of it are weighted by our experiences and knowledge. Just like in every other thing in our lives.

Thank you for not minimizing or mocking my experience as if im some troll.
You are correct. Everyones view is based on their experience.
I hope you are wrong though. It would be sad if we cant ever get the city cleaned up.
For me it’s not so much about feeling unsafe as it is the filth and stench and homeless sidewalk tents that have druggies using in front of families, etc.
it may have been worse in the pandemic, but its still glaringly worse than when i lived downtown in the early 2010’s.
If our goal is to be better than the pandemic, its not a very high bar to hit. I hope we can aim higher and hit the target.

Undoubtedly we should aim higher and I too hope we go back to the early 2000s downtown.

That being said, we are in that weird limbo of mental health crisis meeting solutions and that's not gonna happen overnight. I'm seeing incremental (and sometimes it's just tiny) changes.

We want answers and we want progress but we have found something that is so multi faceted and technology for the most part can't fix it. It's humans helping humans in the most humane way they think possible.

    It's just tough.

That duck is probably filthy and disease-ridden.

Maybe even rabid. If it kills you, don't say I didn't warn you.

Was downtown at Dantes again last night. I purposely parked in a different area than last time so my walk to the club took a different path.
Aside from the four cop cars and ambulance on 3rd and pine, it was fairly clean and innocent. Yeah still alot of grafitti and what not but not near the trash and homeless i saw up near 10th and burnside.
3rd ave did look better other than the Paris theatre.
I do know 11th and 12th almost the full length of 405 is full of tents and homeless but not down by 3rd ave.
Things seem to be looking a bit better in some areas.
