You're missing a verb. Think of him as like a British Sports Car: fantastic when it works, which is 1% of the time.
He's going to get injured again and you're going to regret not moving him for value (if he has any). If he doesn't have value this is all moot, since the Blazers wouldn't just give him away for nothing.
Yup. If he wasn't such an obvious injury risk, I'd totally keep him...... but the guy has very little chance of staying healthy. He's healthy right now and he's balling. See if you can get a decent pick.
He's averaged about 36 games a season, so he has been healthy about 44% of the time. Now he certainly has a chance of being hurt, I mean it's more likely he misses a game than plays. Still I think your underestimating his chance to contribute. He's a clear difference maker when playing so if he gives us a 44% chance to make some noise in the playoffs I'd be super happy with that chance. Over a few years odds are he'd be there to help in one of them. That's likely about every other he's helping us win playoff games. We've won playoff series in 3 of 25 years this century, never being a contender in any of them, so 44% sounds pretty good. Now if we can cash him in for a good FRP yes I'd pull the trigger, mostly that's just from us being so far from contending though. If he didn't have the injuries we never would have acquired him and he'd be on a way more expensive contract. Yes injuries contribute to not wanting him to be on our team, but it lessens the return we can get and lessens the cost of keeping him.
At the deadline a team with over a dozen picks like OKC would make sense to trade for him. They'll have tons of picks either way, but that 44% chance he has to be healthy may ultimately push them over the title. Now if we were a playoff team I'd be more reluctant to trade him away. So yes his injury risk lessens his value to us and to everyone. But really the prime reason to trade him is we aren't a contender right now and he has an expiring contract next season.
I'd leave it up to Williams. If he wants to stay, keep him. I'll never forget when the Cleveland Indians traded Victor Martinez, a guy who loved the team and the city and absolutely wanted to stay. They might have thought he was getting older, but he fooled them by going on to have nine more productive years.
Kind of a two bladed sword. He is a risk for us to keep him, but his injury history probably makes what we would get not worth trading him.
If someone is close to a ring, they might be willing to roll the dice that RWIII will stay healthy for the season. There's no reason for us to roll those dice.
How bout we just enjoy what we have while we have it? His value to the team extends beyond the minutes on court - as somebody on Reddit pointed out, he was constantly talking on D last night, telling everyone where to go. Maybe he's our Udonis Haslem. You don't trade those players.
If he’s not expensive and really doesn’t get you much in return I’d gamble and keep him. Honestly my 2nd favorite player on the Blazers right now
Why do you think he doesn’t get us any value? He’s a really good player when he’s healthy. He’s just not healthy very much.
If you can get a first-round pick for him you take it and run. If anything less....sure, keep him and pray he doesn't get injured again.
