What strikes me about this is how absolutely average Sharpe is in every category. There is nothing in which he is outstanding. Forgiveness from @Mediocre Man but Sharpe is playing as the ultimate Mediocre Man. Scoot is outstanding in only one category - turnovers. Sorry, dude, below average in everything except the bad one - there you are exceptional. Doesn't make me very excited about a future with those two.
Thought I'd check Clingan's per-minute blocks to the top guys on the Blazer all-time list as well as a few other well known-shot blockers we've had: 1. Clingan - .12 blocks per minute 2. Hassan Whiteside - .098 blocks per minute 3. Theo Ratliff - .096 4. Sam Bowie - .087 5. Bill Walton - .076 6. Wayne Cooper - .071 7. Joel Pryzbilla - .067 8. Arvydas Sabonis - .043
He may be #2 in assists but plays a lot less than #1, but he is also #1 in turnovers and plays a lot less than #2. No matter how you slice it, I find him increasingly underwhelming.
I'm not sure how it could be gauged, but I think those numbers have to be connected to average minutes. Whiteside averaged 30 minutes while Clingan is only averaging 17. I'd think it's a lot easier to chase blocks when you only play half of the minutes of the other guy
And last year he was 19. Adding a year to his age hasn't change his underwhelming-ness. Next year he will be yet another year older and likely still underwhelming. I've reached the "sunk cost" / cut losses and move on threshold and would not be sad to see him go in a trade. I've been hoping to see growth and improvement and kind of like Shae, there is the occasional "yeah, maybe he could work out", more often than not it is more of a "why don't we play someone else"?
Yeah, keep setting the bar high and you’ll continue to be upset. Just like people in here with win predictions. I knew we were getting a kid who was just turned 19. How can you expect him to kill it in the league until he’s played a few years? I certainly didn’t’. I’ll wait to judge like I’ve said before for a few seasons. Especially when he isn’t playing behind these vets. To soon to judge.
Nobody is expecting Scoot to kill it. Yes we see a few 20 year old like Anthony Edwards or Luka in their second years scoring over 20ppg. That is super rare and those end up being hall of fame level players. Scoot hasn't even been at a level of an NBA backup. At #3 overall just like Luka there was hope he would have a positive impact on the court. Here is a list of PG that by age 20 all scored over 15ppg, ranked by winshare; Chris Paul Luka Dončić Tony Parker LaMelo Ball Jamal Murray Kyrie Irving Stephon Marbury Derrick Rose Brandon Jennings Kyrie Irving Ja Morant Stephon Marbury Trae Young LaMelo Ball Coby White Isiah Thomas John Wall Russell Westbrook D'Angelo Russell Unfortunately Scoot isn't the scorer any of those players are nor does he have a positive winshare as they all do. Not sure what you expected from the #3 overall pick who was sold as being a #1 overall quality. I was hopeful we could at least have a long term starting PG. He isn't close to that level yet and has shown little improvement in two years.
I'd assume Clingan minutes will go up over the next 3 years so we'll just have to see what his block rate does. Might be better to compare him with some of the all time NBA block leaders.
The answer is No. He doesn't play many minutes a game but is healthy so plays all the games. Banton actually leads in points, then Simons and Sharpe. Rebounds: Clingan, than Ayton Assists: Scoot Steals: Correction, Banton leader , then Williams, but Taze Moore actually the winner in very limited minutes Blocks: Clingan, then Williams, then Banton. Turnovers: Scoot, Banton clear winners, then Simons and Clingan tied.
It isn't Scoot's fault fans were suckered into thinking our team would draft anybody worth keeping at #3.
Plenty of media, scouts, teams, and others were high on Scoot - so its pretty reasonable for many Blazer fans to have got their hopes up. It's not like we had some big playoff run to sit back and root for or reminisce about. We had finished our second year of tanking, had a roster that made no sense, and were days away from our franchise icon demanding out. If Blazer fans didn't get excited about a hyped rookie like Scoot - there's just about zero things for Blazer fans to be excited for. If we somehow get one of Flagg/Bailey/Harper fans are going to get super hyped as well. That won't be "suckered into" anything - that would just be hoping for something of a damn while the team will be in their 5th year of losing and tanking. That pressure on Scoot of being a top 3 pick just goes with the territory. NBA players get huge paychecks and tons of endorsement opportunities. The flip side is they have expectations and pressure.
I certainly remember a ton of pre-draft hype for Scoot "would be the #1 pick in a normal draft" "best PG prospect in a decade" " athleticism like Russell Westbrook" * a more than worthy replacement for Dame" the gap between the hype and the reality is gigantic
Deni and Toumani are the base. Two very talented players that aren’t afraid to play defense and have excellent size. No more small guys.
