You are bragging about the UO baseball team. When have they ever won anything? I might be misremembering them being multi baseball National champions. Can you help?

The travel will be nuts for Texas State. But the Pac is really in a difficult bind desperately needing that final 8th football team. Adding Texas State would probably help a ton with a media deal as now your opening up Dallas Houston Austin Texas TV markets to the conference.

I'd imagine Texas State is demanding a revenue guarantee or 3x or more of the revenue of other schools or such which actually may be an acceptable deal for both sides at least in the short term. Might be a way for Pac to just get the conference going and explore a more permanent 8th member without a deadline. Texas State could look at it as a way to expand national footprint and eventually keep taking steps to jump to a bigger regional conference.

Texas State is in the Sun Belt Conference. The media deal that conference has only pays each school 2M annually; I believe that's one of the lowest conference payouts around.

so if, for example the Pac-X can get a deal in the 7-9M/year range, hypothetically, Texas State would be coming out ahead. Except of course that travel costs would eat up all of that extra revenue. They would also have a 5M exit fee. IIRC, the MWC, while negotiating with Texas State offered to cover any exit fees; but I don't know what, if any, travel costs were covered. Texas State declined the MWC offer and officially informed the Sun Belt Conference they would remain a member

right now, Texas State probably has the Pac-X bent over a barrel. The Pac is getting desperate to add that 8th team, and TS might be the only remotely viable candidate. I'd imagine that a certain condition they'd attach would be a guarantee that the Pac-X cover at least 80% of TS's travel costs. They would probably also demand a set annual distribution, regardless of the media deal. Maybe something like 10M/year + 80% of travel costs. Could easily be more though because they have all of the leverage
    ************************************************************************************

OSU/WSU really fucked this up. All they had to do was agree that all MWC teams could join the revamped Pac-12. That would have fit perfectly with all their rhetoric about being the schools left in the lurch by the self-interested avarice of the 10 departing Pac-12 teams. Instead, they tried to do the same thing to the MWC that was done to them.

Reportedly, the MWC was ok with an uneven distribution of media revenue; a 3-tier payout with OSU/WSU getting the largest allocation (then a middle tier with San Diego St, Boise St, etc). OSU/WSU could have then split the 130M settlement with the 10 departing team + future Pac-12 revenues from existing contracts. A total somewhere in the 220-240M range. That's 110-120M each

instead, they paid the MWC 28M for a scheduling agreement. They agreed to pay the exit fees for the 5 MWC teams; about 85-90M. And of course, there is the 55M poaching fee owed to the MWC that OSU/WSU agreed to but are now trying to escape in court (might be in arbitration now). They could have each had a war chest of 110-120M. If they lose their latest legal battle, that war chest could drop from 115M to 30M. And a good chunk of that will be eaten up by mobilizing the revamped Pac-X

it could get worse too. If Texas State says no to Pac and the Pac-X fails the deadline for an FBS conference (IIRC Aug 1 2026), they would spend a minimum of 2 years as an FCS conference and lose CPS revenue. That would be damaging

Texas State? What the hell. Who are the other schools they already have lined up? I’d rather see schools like Portland State, Boise State or schools like that.

Boise state already is going to be a member.

Portland state isn't big enough. If they were going to go that low, they should take the chance on Sacramento State instead.

Are they trying to recruit the school size or the tv market size? Wonder how that works. But doesn’t PSU have a huge student body? Sac State, Fresno State or something like that HAS to be better than whatever the hell Texas State has to offer, no?

the PAC must add another FBS school to remain an FBS conference (and be eligible for the playoffs collecting a share of CFP money). PSU isn't FBS; neither is Sac State

Texas State is FBS and kind of the only realistic candidate remaining. I doubt Stanford/Cal would bail from the ACC to join the Pac-X

Yes but Sac State is actively pursuing getting to FBS. Shaq is trying to help get them on the map.

It has to be an FBS school , Portland State/Sac State/etc won't work.

Once they get 8 members they could have the 9th be one of those others schools. Then after so many years Texas State wouldn't be needed. So might make sense for Pac to overpay for maybe ~5 years just to ensure the conference stays FBS.

Fresno State is in the MWC and all the schools left there agreed to stick together. Now there are big lawsuits with MWC and PAC so seems just about impossible for another school to switch.

They might be able to eventually get in but the conference needs an 8th Football school that is already in the FBS today to remain an FBS conference. So even if Sac state joined the Pac still needs to get Texas State or a similar level of football school.

yes, but by rule, it takes two full years for an FCS school to upgrade to FBS status; that's after the formal application. The last I heard, Sac St. was still in the process of becoming eligible to submit the application. So even if they met the application standard this summer, it would be the summer of 2027 before they could become FBS. And that's a year after the PAC's deadline

Chris Murray says it's down to Texas State and/or New Mexico St. :

This article says Sac State could be in the FBS as early as 2026.
