What exactly do we need in a new arena that couldn't be added to the Moda?

This is what I would do with the Rose Quarter.

Sell the MC to Spirit Mountain and allow them to remodel it into a casino. I've said this before, a casino in that area would help our convention center get conventions, and it would bring life to the area 365 24/7.

Tear down the Blazers office and the Rehab place. Having a casino and the Moda as anchors, you could build a nice hotel there and add more restaurants.

Cover and connect the Moda and MC Casino/hotel with a Las Vegas Fremont Street-style LCD roof. Rain sucks, and you could show Blazer highlights on game nights, band videos during concerts, and ads.

Bring the Max closer and up to the same level as the Rose Quarter, no more walking under a pee-stained overpass to catch Max.

Nah, he has faded away into the same shadow realm that previously housed Maris and Jlprk.

Maybe they could do a restaurant/Eatery area on the top floor with a glass floor looking down on the court?

There are two Max stations already very close to the Rose Quarter. There is one on Interstate and another on Multnomah. A very very short 2-3 minute walk.

    I love your other ideas!

Sly's gambling addiction aside, is there a reason they can't just tear down the old MC and redevelop the whole area around the MODA?

    Silver seems to think so.

Moda is a concrete bunker. Remodeling the surface is just putting lipstick on a pig.

Silver calling for a new arena is a bit extreme and probably just a tactic to get Moda a major overhaul

And what would that look like? What would you want to see and do in that area? I gave it a shot. Let's see what you can come up with.

This is what I'm getting at, I see lots of we need a new arena, we need to redevelop the Rose Quarter, but what the hell does that mean?

It would take a hell of an overhaul to bring Sears back.

We went to a Kings game last year and there were a lot of people outside the arena at restaurants and bars that were surrounding the arena. Having several food carts or even changeable stalls with different vendors would draw people and follow a Portland style. Having it under some kind of cover would be nice. Maybe have some pop a shot machines outside along with other activities would be cool.

The last time tearing down the MC was seriously discussed, the Portland Bluehairs who still hold a lot of political sway in the city nixed it because it's "A COOL OLD BUILDING" and Portland NEVER throws anything away that white people cherish. Yes, it's architecturally neat, but that land is so much more valuable in the overall development of the area than the aesthetics of it.

A large casino in downtown Portland on the waterfront is a bit much, but cities like Pittsburgh have done it and they helped revitalize areas that had been depressed for decades. I don't think the Oregon Lottery would let it happen, though. Remember when The Spirit Mountain tribe offered to buy the old Greyhound Raceway track and for the trouble, would have GIVEN the city of Portland enough to build a multi-purpose Baseball/Football Stadium? They city and state both said no.

Go to the new convention center hotel at night during a big convention, and there are tour buses lined up to take those tourists to Ilani. The City of Portland needs that tourism and money to remain in the city. We build a really nice convention center, have an amazing airport to get them, but we're not getting any trickle down because there really isn't much to do around the convention center/Rose quarter.

Portland has the biggest voice in Salem. Our last Governor elected outside of Portland was Kitzhaber. If Portland demands it, the Oregon Lottery will come around.
