It doesn’t mean as much as you’d think. Yankees always have a high payroll but they spend their money on washed up players that are past their prime. Often times trading away young players in their farm system that flourish somewhere else.
Pudge could hit decent average. Not a lot of power. But he played along a stacked lineup and was probably the best defensive catcher ever. Mike Piazza was a catcher that was known more for hitting. Often times players start their career as catchers and as they get older they go to 1st base or DH. Knees can’t hold up like they could when they were young. Any more knowledge bombs you want young man?
You did ask that and i got lost in the weeds. For playoffs, id venture to guess they make it more often than not, but with the advent of the wild card (and 3rd wild card), more and more just getting in is good enough and lower paying teams can scrap to a world series. I use to be a big believer in that money got you far (a world series) but lately it just hasnt nearly at the clip I thought itd be at. But just straight playoffs, thats probably a 70ish% clip, if not higher, but id have to do more actual digging.
Without question. ESPECIALLY now where even if its the playoffs it seems everyone is on pitch counts. I never understood a team neglecting the bullpen to pay more for a bat.
Last I looked they were going to play the Red Sox. Not sure if that is still the matchup. They will beat Boston if that is the case.
The question was do you win more games if you spend more. Not do you win more championships. Are the payrolls of the winningest teams in the league higher than the basement dwellers year in and year out?
Spending helps. But a team like Rays have had a lot of recent success with very low payrolls. The A’s have done it a lot as well. It used to be those teams that had such a small payroll were awful. Then the whole money ball concept came about and it changed things a bit. If I’m watching playoff game and my teams aren’t in it I always naturally root for the team with the lower payrolls

I mean if the 1940-60’s teams payroll matters to you then I’m not sure it’s worth reasoning. Most the players from that era were organic to the organization.
Phillies are #1 favorites. A lot of people have seattle as #2 Then the Dodgers. As of today. No one trusts the Dodgers bullpen, which is the biggest X factor in the playoffs.
