  1. Does anyone here do photography?

I did my first sports assignment of a soccer game yesterday, andI need some tips on shooting.

It was a night game under stadium lights. I used a Nikon D90 to shoot.

I ended up settling in at 1600 ISO, 1/200, and 5.6F for my shots. I don't think the 5.6F was something that I chose. I am pretty sure I was shooting in shutter priority mode, so the camera chose the aperture.

I toyed going with a faster shutter speed, but the pictures were much too dark as the camera wasn't getting enough light in.

This is something that I want to fix for next time I go out and shoot, especially before I have to shoot something more important, like a football or basketball game.

One problem I had was that I couldn't get my shutter speed much higher. With how a quarter second can completely change the moment, it would be nice to get to a faster shutter speed so I can get more snaps.

Overall, I'm pretty pleased how the pictures came out. They have nice color to them imo, but one problem I noticed was that the faces of the black players are too dark. And I'm not sure exactly what adjustments I would want to make, because I think the darkness of the white players in the pictures looks great, and makes the pictures look more dramatic. I haven't adjusted my photos in photoshop yet, so I'm sure I'll be able to make the black players faces look fine in then.

Anyone have any tips for this?

What kind of lens are you using. Specifically, what's the lowest aperture (that F number) it can go to? Do you know how to shoot in manual. You can't trust automatic (in all forms, even shutter and aperture priority) for something as fast paced as a sports game, especially at night.

Don't take pictures of black players. Solves your problems.

  7. My personal camera is better than that, and I have access to some other really, really good equipment, so the camera isn't the problem.

  8. I think that the lens was the problem. I don't think the aperture on the lens could go low enough for what I needed it to do. For next time I'm shooting, I'm going to make sure to get a lens with a lower aperture.

And I can shoot manual, although for sports, I definitely will keep the camera on autofocus, because there is no way to adjust the focus as fast as needed with how fast the action moves, and the focus wasn't a problem in the pictures I took. I think I just need the better lens so I can get the aperture lower and shutter speed faster. With the lens I was using, I think I could have got the faster shutter speed, but I would have had to jack the ISO up, and I didn't want all that noise in my pictures.

first problem is your ISO, too high. well, this all depends on the level of light in the area, but you can probably lower it a bit.

also have you got your white balance sorted out on your camera? this should make a world of difference.

your lens is not good enough, i can tell as the photos, if we're being really picky here, are not as sharp as they could be. this of course can be corrected by doing the right colour correction followed by the right sharpening methods using photoshop. or you could spend a little more cash to get you the right lens for the job.

through my years in photography ive found you really do need to spend the money even if it is just for something that will only be used on certain occasions, but it usually lifts the level of your images to a much higher level.

i dont know much about nikons, but i can tell you a great great camera that ive noticed is used by most band photographers, sports photographers and photographic journalists is the canon 1D. thats the camera to use to get the best quality you can. if you sort out your lens issues, and perhaps upgrade your camera, then you could make some serious money with some really great shots.

  11. I don't think the lens was an issue. I was using an approximately $2000 lens.

I was shooting at 1/1600, F4, with a 400 ISO. There was an overcast on the field.

What exactly would I be sorting out with the white balance? We won't go over that until a class I have next fall.

I definitely need to go for a lower ISO next time. I need to look for an affordable used short range lens, because the only short lenses we have are the kit lenses, which have a tough time getting a high enough shutter speed for sports. The long range lens, even fully zoomed out, had a lot of trouble autofocusing near our sides rim.
