<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to his players after the 7-1 Champions League thrashing of Roma, describing it as the greatest European performance of his twenty-year reign.

The Reds ran riot in their quarter-final second leg clash at Old Trafford and were 3-0 up inside the opening 19 minutes thanks to goals from Michael Carrick, Alan Smith and Wayne Rooney.

Cristiano Ronaldo twice added his name to the scoresheet either side of the break, before Carrick struck again on the hour. Substitute Patrice Evra added a seventh goal nine minutes from time.

"It was a fantastic performance, the scoring tells you that," beamed Sir Alex at the final whistle. "You would have never expected anything like that; it's got to be the best European performance in my time at the club.

?The players had the confidence to believe in themselves after a couple of bad results in the last week. We felt that if we could get the first goal it would open the door for us and that's what happened.

"After that, the speed and penetration of our play was absolutely superb."

The United boss was particularly delighted to see Alan Smith amongst the goals. The striker bagged his first of the season after making his first European start since December 2005.

"He?s deserved it more than anyone," declared Sir Alex. "He's been through a year of real frustration in terms of getting back to his best. But he?s stayed patient. He?s trained like a beast and his attitude to playing football is wonderful."

The Reds will face either AC Milan or Bayern Munich in the last four of the competition. The pair drew 2-2 in Italy last week and meet on Wednesday evening in the second leg clash.

"I'll be watching the match," insisted Sir Alex. "Our scouts are going out to Germany on Wednesday morning so we'll get a report from them. I wouldn't like to say who will win</div>
