so last Friday I was playing flag football, and I play defensive end on my team. so I was running full speed and had my leg fully extended, the qb of the other team took off to the left of me, so I turned my body with my left leg fully planted and heard a loud cracking/tearing noise and fell on the ground screaming holding my knee. I just found out I tore my ACL =( anyone else ever tear a ligament in their knee? what should I expect?

Wow I've never even broken a bone. I can't even begin to imagine what tearing your ACL feels like

My mate tore his ACL about 6 months ago and is awaiting his second surgery for it. Yesterday morning he twisted out of bed and tore his MCL I think, in the same knee. He was supposed to be out of sport for 18 months, but who knows how long it could be now.

Just see a doctor for the right treatments and take care of yourself. Don't attempt to do anything you're not supposed to such as extensive exercise, though I believe the doctor will tell you to moderate exercise keeping off of the leg. Things like crunches and stretches should be fine.

I had a friend who tore his and like cpaw said, just make sure that you put the proper effort into rehab. The harder you workout the better your chances are at a good recovery. If you dont rehab as much as you should or dont take the proper steps you are going to have problems for twice as long as you should.

I know it hurts, but I always wondered what it feels like...cause whenever you here 'torn acl' its like oh S**t!
Anyways good luck with it man, don't try and rush yourself back into sports.

I tore my ACL in my senior year of high school in a football game. It sounds really similar to your incident -- I was running the ball and had all of my weight on my planted left leg then got tackled by two guys on my right. My body went left while my weight was still on my planted leg, so it popped.
I take it you've seen the doctor already? If he was like my doctor, he's gonna tell you to stretch your knee so you can break up any scar tissue. That scar tissue stuff is what'll make you're knee stiff, and you gotta get rid of it before you get surgery. Here's what you do:
1. Get a friend to help you stretch for 5-7 minutes.
2. Sit on you butt and have your friend place his hands ABOVE THE KNEE and slowly push down to straighten your leg. Yell at your friend to start light and gradually add more weight. Go to the point of pain and hold it like that for 10 seconds. Make sure your friend does this above the knee and with slow, gradual speed....or else it'll hurt.
3. Lie on your stomach. Bring up your leg as if you were trying to touch your heel to your butt. Have your friend put his hand on your ANKLE, slowly add more strength to bring your heel to your butt. Go to the point of pain and hold it for 10 seconds then slowly release.
4. Repeat these stretches for a total of 3 on your butt and 3 on your stomach, alternating between the two. You MUST get a friend to help you out cuz they're the only ones that can force your knee to bend/straighen.
Stretch like this at least once a day for now, until you get to see your doctor again and he gives you some other things to do.
I was dumb and didn't do any stretching for months. The result was an extremely stiff knee and an extremely painful rehab experience before I had surgery.
Once the scar tissue is cleared up and you have surgery, expect to be in a wheel chair or crutches anywhere from a couple days to 4 weeks. Do what I did and use the time to practice your jump shot or something that doesn't involve moving around and changing directions.
Good luck!
