"The Maple Leafs could end up losing the bonus player in the Kris Versteeg trade, making it a 3-for-1 advantage for the Chicago Blackhawks.

The fleet-footed winger in question is Billy Sweatt, who remains unsigned 10 days after Toronto sent Viktor Stalberg, Chris DiDomenico and Philippe Paradis to the Stanley Cup champions for him and Versteeg. If Sweatt, who is leaving the Colorado College program after a career-best 33 points in 39 games, doesn't join the Leafs by Aug. 15, he becomes an unrestricted free agent. And there will be takers.

"This trade took us completely by surprise," said Sweatt's Chicago-based agent Scott Norton. "We had not thought a contract could be worked out with Chicago before this happened. I will say the Leafs have made a generous offer, but on the other hand, free agency is just a month away and that's very (tempting)."

The 6-foot Sweatt was picked 37th overall in 2007, described as a taller version of speed demon Todd Marchant, projected as a decent third-liner. But because he's gone three years without a contract, the Hawks were about to lose his rights. Leafs general manager Brian Burke raved about Sweatt's wheels and had said he expected to sign him.

Norton agreed that Sweatt would seem to have a far better chance getting playing time with the rebuilding Leafs as opposed to cracking the Cup champions.

"We'll have to see what Toronto does in the next while, because its lineup is not set," Norton said. "We have to judge what's best for Billy at that point, whether it's worth going on the open market."

In other Leafs news, Marlie captain Ben Ondrus has signed a two-way deal as a free agent with Edmonton. "

They might as well trade him. He hasn't played a game in the league and he's talking about money. He has earned NOTHING and is owed NOTHING!!!

Hopefully they can package him an Kaberle up for some top 6 talent.

    Good riddance! People these days.

Whatever happened to "love of the game"? Glad we got Müller. Sounds like he will be a keeper.
