Both.By giving it, in a way, you earn it. Usually, people respect you when you respect them. You also have to earn respect by your actions.I thought this was going to be something about PFF demanding respect here.
You earn respect by showing respect to others. Not just by being the best player on the team or being the best poster or having the most money. If you don't respect others, they won't respect you.
U don't give respect... I need my respect.| I aint just givin it away.|U show respect as a result, individuals will show ya respect.| -everyone is not nice/respectful tho- However don't be too much of a swift pessimist and stop showing respect cause no one is showing you any.| Eventually people will change.| lol hopefully...some people just crazy
IMO I think you earn respect through your actions, personality, and basic human civility. I think manners, smiling, etc are inherant but truly respecting a person must be earned through their actions.
I think the big thing is that what most people define as respect, I define as basic human civility. One of the princeton dictionary definitions of respect is:"an attitude of admiration or esteem"I believe that admiration, esteem, and compliance should be earned, whether somebody's your friend or the president of the United States.now if you're going by this definition of respect:"Respect is the objective, unbiased consideration and regard for the rights, values, beliefs and property of all people. Kant's categorical imperative as well as what is commonly understood of being a gentleman incorporate the concept of respect. "Then sure, I respect everybody and respect is how you gain respect. It's a semantical question really.
